Chapter Thirteen – KateSaturday 19 December. Evening I stare at my reflection in the Art Deco mirror on my dressing table; I don't like what I see. I shouldn't have gone to the hospital, it is not something I would normally do. I'm too eager to impress Cecilia instead of being true to myself. Going to ICU made me no better than the national hacks. Not only did I embarrass myself, by getting caught by DCI Beckley and DI Wakeman, but I made myself relive my own harrowing ordeal. My blood runs cold. I knock back rosé medicinally and enjoy its fruity tang. Mascara stains adorn my cheeks, which I remove with a soft cotton pad in circular motions. I look drained and pitiful.
