Chapter Sixteen – KateChristmas Eve 2015 The dark sky illuminates the powdery crystals sweeping the length of the pebbled beach. Snowflakes continue to fall, sliding against the windscreen. Clevedon Pier is barely visible through the dense conditions. “Driving home for Christmas” plays on the radio. The cheery melody evokes a smile. I've finished early to return the photo to Charlie. The M5 motorway is quiet, having avoided rush hour. I slow my speed on the dual carriageway into Weston, passing a gritting lorry, which spits tiny shards against my car. Weston is a seaside town stuck somewhere between the 1970s and the present day. At the height of summer, it's full of pensioners on day trips from Birmingham and Wales, enjoying fish and chips and drinking from flasks along the promenade.
