Chapter Ten – The Trap Claire leaned back in her office chair, a small smile tugging at her lips. She had spent days planning this, and tonight everything was set. If Ethan thought he could walk away unscathed, he was about to learn otherwise. Across town, Ethan was wrapping up a late meeting at the firm. His father had been pressuring him to take over more responsibilities, and he couldn’t afford mistakes. But lately, his focus was slipping. Every time he looked at a file, he saw Claire’s face. Every time he tried to work, he thought about Lily getting too close to her. That night, as he left the building, a colleague rushed up to him. “Ethan, did you approve this contract?” The man shoved a folder into his hands. Ethan frowned, flipping through the pages. It was a deal with a major client—but the numbers didn’t add up. Entire clauses had been altered. If signed, it would cost the company millions. “I never saw this,” Ethan said firmly. But the signature at the bottom was his. His chest tightened. “This is forged.” The colleague’s expression darkened. “The board won’t care. They’ll see your name. You’d better figure out how this happened before your father does.” Ethan’s mind raced. Who could have done this? Who had access? Then it hit him like a punch to the gut. Claire. She worked in a partner company—she knew the system, the documents, the timing. And she knew exactly how much this would ruin him. That night, Ethan drove straight to her apartment. She was sitting by the window when he arrived, sipping wine as if she had been waiting for him. “You look troubled,” she said coolly, not even surprised to see him. “What did you do?” His voice was low but sharp. She tilted her head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Don’t play games with me, Claire. That contract had my signature on it. You think I don’t know it was you?” She stood and walked closer, her heels clicking softly on the wooden floor. “And if it was me? What then? You’ll run to your father and cry for help? Or maybe you’ll finally understand what it feels like to lose everything in one night.” Ethan’s jaw tightened. “This isn’t about me anymore. You’re putting hundreds of jobs at risk just to hurt me.” Claire’s expression faltered for a split second, but she recovered quickly. “Collateral damage. Something your family never cared about when they tore us apart.” Ethan stepped closer, his anger barely contained. “Claire, stop this before it goes too far. Whatever hate you have for me, fine. I’ll take it. But don’t let it consume you.” Her eyes glistened, and for a heartbeat, he thought she might listen. But then her lips curved into a bitter smile. “It’s too late, Ethan. I’m not the broken girl you left behind. I’m stronger now. And the stronger I get, the more you’ll lose.” Ethan clenched his fists. He wanted to tell her everything—that he had left only because of his parents’ threats, that every night without her had been a punishment worse than anything she could plan. But saying it would change nothing now. She didn’t want truth. She wanted war. “I won’t let you drag Lily into this,” he said firmly. “Or this company. I’ll fight you if I have to.” Claire leaned in so close he could feel her breath. “Fight all you want. You’ll still lose. Because the difference between us, Ethan, is that I have nothing left to fear.” She pulled back and sank into her chair again, calm and composed, as if the conversation hadn’t just torn open a battlefield between them. Ethan stood frozen, his heart pounding. He had always believed time would heal their wounds, that somehow they could find their way back to each other. But tonight, staring at her, he realized something terrifying. The woman he loved was gone. And the woman standing before him was his enemy.
