Chapter 1

1560 Words
There's something unusual about tonight; the moon is so close to the horizon that it seems reachable with an outstretched hand. Already enormous, it appears much bigger than usual; in a few days, it will reach full moon. The full moon will be so massive that it will obscure most of the starry sky. Stranger still, it is unusually warm for May, and the air is so saturated with moisture that it makes my reclining chair and the floor around me feel like they are covered in a film. As I watch the world outside, a strange sense of expectancy fills me. Maybe it's because tonight something feels off. Alternatively, the atmosphere is tense and potentially explosive. I stand silently watching a mother and her young deer make their way across a clearing in the woods. To get a better view, I lean forward in my chair and follow the mother deer and her little fawn as they wander off. They go with such caution, as if they, too, are aware of the impending danger, which seems to permeate everything. As they near the forest's border, the mother finally begins to feel at ease, and the wolf pounces. With such a swift and deadly attack, the fawn has no chance of survival. The mother's only hope is that the wolf kills her baby quickly, sparing the child any further pain. Surely this is the end of it, I think to myself as I witness the scene before me. But then something else happened that I didn't expect at all. I sit in the shadows and watch as the mother protects her young by not letting them run away from the tiger. She instead dares the wolf to attack her by staring directly into his eyes. Astounded, I watch as the wolf backs away, realizing it has been outmatched. Then I mutter, "I'll be damned. If I could discover a lady who would give up all for the people she cares about, I would treat her like a goddess. “Knock” “Knock” I stretch out my aching legs and get up to answer the door after hearing a knock. Someone asks, "Who is it?I ask with a huff since I'm annoyed that someone interrupted my peace and quiet before dinner. With so many people needing my time and attention, moments like these are rare. I give a sharp jerk of my head and open the door, staring angrily at the woman who stands only a few steps away. In a trembling voice, she says, "It is dinner time Chaos, I was told to come get you as soon as it was ready." Her eyes widen as she takes a few steps back from me. As soon as I realize my mistake, my entire demeanor shifts and I am unable to talk again. In a low tone, I reply, "Yes. I'm sorry if I frightened you. In a minute or two, I'll head down there. Tell them I'm getting ready to go now.” After a little pause, she meets my eyes and says, "Yes, but please hurry." I watch as she spins on her heels and heads up the stairs because "Alpha Roderick sounds rather irritated and there is no telling what he might do if he has to wait too long before eating." She pauses, turns her head, and smiles at me before continuing on to the kitchen to share the news. Since Alpha Roderick is heading up the stairs with a look of rage on his face and a spring in his step, I can only assume she does. He seems to be looking for trouble, and he just could find it if he isn't careful. I get ready to leave my room and nearly bump into him. Roderick whirls around and yells, "Man!" What's the holdup? I really need food, and we have some other business to take care of tonight after we complete this. With a calm voice, I look up into his enraged face and ask, "What are you talking about, may I ask?"” There appears to be an issue that must be addressed, but I have more to share with you once we finish eating. From what I've gathered, The Wind Walkers Pack has chosen to throw a rave in order to lure in their next meal of unsuspecting partygoers. There's no doubt that we need to put a stop to them before we attract unwanted attention to ourselves," he says to me, raising a troubled brow as he recounts the situation. As I nod my head, my thoughts turn to the tasks that must be completed before I can sit down to dinner. Before I even finish pulling out my chair, I turn to Roderick and announce, "As soon as we are done, we will gather everyone and leave to stop this m******e before it goes any further." I've made it clear that I won't put up with this, and they should know better. When everyone at the table realizes this, they stand about until I sit down. After everyone has finished eating and their bellies are full, I make an announcement: "It is time. Put your stuff together, and we'll go fix the damage. I often wonder why now, of all times, they dare to test my tolerance just before I follow everyone else out the front door. Is it possible that my prolonged silence and lack of assertive behavior has contributed to this? Must I? I just stand there and think about it, thinking to myself. No matter what, we have to keep the humans safe. Our existence must remain secret at all costs. Because if humans suddenly came to that realization, it would be disastrous for our species. They'd kill us out like they do regular wolves, and the species would nearly disappear. I shook my head, closed the door, walked to the truck, and got in as everyone else waited. I shift it into gear, switch it on, and glance in the rearview mirror, all the while thinking, "Perhaps this is what has me so on edge, or maybe it is something entirely different." As I accompany the rest of the group in the caravan to the rave, I can't help but feel that there's more going on than what we're being told. I can hear the music coming from miles away and I know exactly where the rave is. It's already underway, and I can only pray that we arrived before the s*******r began. when I drive through the woods, I can make out a clearing up ahead, and my senses immediately go into overdrive when I get a whiff of Jordan, Alpha of The Wind Walkers pack. The absence of a blood odor prompts me to accelerate as rapidly as I dare till I reach my target. As soon as I reach the clear road, I give a signal to the people following me and we all stop before the dilapidated structure. Before I even leave the building, the hood of my truck is illuminated by the bright neon lights that have filtered through the gaps in the walls. Indicating that the others should wait, I gesture for Beta Daniel and Beta John to come with me. Since I have no idea where the Wind Walkers are at the time, I have to be stealthy as I go through the shadows. The music is getting louder, and I know the pack is already inside and poised to launch an attack. The music suddenly picked up in volume and tempo; what caused this? Before rushing to the front door and motioning for others to follow suit, I have this thought. Within seconds of my taking the lead, everyone is following along behind me. Waiting for me to open the door so they may pounce. When I hold my ground and wait for a cue to take charge, they just hang around looking. They exchange curious glances, and then, as soon as I give one of them an angry look, he stops whispering. When I get to the door and don't hear any yelling, I quietly open it. As I tiptoe inside the chamber, I see that the pack of Wind Walkers is surrounding the humans with murderous intent. My gang spreads out rapidly through the crowd till we are between the humans and the offending pack as their fangs protrude while they wait to attack. The humans keep dancing to the blaring music, fully unaware to what is going to happen around them. Standing there, poised to seize power at a moment's notice, I notice a peculiar sensation as I see all the people bobbing their heads to the music. One girl in particular sticks out from the rest; she has brown hair and green eyes. I feel compelled to approach the spot where she is waiting. Meanwhile, Alpha Jordan approaches me from behind and comes dangerously close to knocking me out. In time, I spin around and shout, "Stop, right now," but softly so as not to frighten the individuals nearby. If you don't listen to me as your king, none of you will survive to see another day. Alpha Jordan hesitates, sensing my serious intent, before I approach him and threaten, "I will rip your throat out if you don't stop right this instant."
