Chapter 3

The next day, Lucas finally came home. The moment he saw me, he put down the cake he was holding, opened his arms, and walked toward me. "I'm so tired, Emma. I need a hug to recharge." I stepped back without letting my reaction show, and his embrace hit nothing but air. Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Still angry? Come on, let me make it up to you. I've got a surprise waiting." Before I could say a word, he pulled me into his car. We drove all the way to the training track. Just as I was getting confused, he dragged me out of the car. "Do you like it?" he asked, pointing at the car in front of us. It was a modified race car, its body completely covered in shimmering pink diamonds that glinted so brightly they made my eyes swim. A flicker of surprise crossed my face. The coaches from our club were standing nearby, their voices full of envy. "I heard modifying this car cost nearly a hundred million dollars. Wow, what a guy." "The cost doesn't matter. Mr. Harrington stuck every single one of these diamonds by hand. He stayed up so late he almost got keratitis." "Emma, go try it out! After you're done, let us take a turn. Boss really dotes on his wife." Listening to their words, the surprise in my chest slowly settled, and my eyes started to prickle with emotion. Everyone says he dotes on his wife, but who really knows who the "wife" in his heart actually is? I had just reached for the door handle when I saw Vivian sitting in the driver's seat. Lucas hurried over to explain. "Vivian signed up for a contest. She's been practicing on this track. Can you help coach her a little, Emma?" I froze for a moment, then nodded. No matter how much I disliked Vivian, I respect anyone who truly loves racing. But if I had known earlier that she didn't even have a basic Class E driver's license, I would never have pulled open that door, no matter what. When the car suddenly lurched unevenly forward, my heart leaped into my throat. I reached for the steering wheel, only to be shoved roughly away by Vivian. "Let go if you don't want to die!" I warned, my eyes red with urgency. But she didn't loosen her grip at all. She just floored the gas. A deafening crash and Lucas's voice hit me at the same time: "Emma!"
