Chapter 4

When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed. Both of my legs were wrapped in plaster casts. I had originally thought it was just a scrape, until I heard arguing from the bed next to mine. "What are you crying for!" a woman snapped sharply. "The lady in the next bed is a race car driver. She broke her leg and will never drive again, and she hasn't even shed a tear. You just sprained your ankle. What do you have to howl about!" "Ahh! No! I don't want to break my leg!" The little boy's cries echoed through the entire ward and sank into my ears. Broken leg? A loud crash rang in my head, like something had just blown apart inside my skull. I was born for racing. From the very first time I touched a steering wheel, I knew my life was tied to the roar of engines. But the thought that I would never race again filled me with a despair worse than death. When Lucas pushed the door open, he caught me lying on the floor. He hurried to squat down and help me up, but when his gaze swept across my tear-streaked face, he realized I already knew. I didn't look at him. I shook off his outstretched hand and asked in a trembling voice, "Where is Vivian Knight?" His expression flickered. Afraid I would do something reckless, he rushed to defend her. "Vivian is young and reckless. I already gave her a good talk about driving without a license. She got hurt too, Emma. Can't you just stop blaming her?" I jerked my head up to look at him, my eyes blazing red. So he knew she didn't have a license, and he still let her drive. He even registered her for the race. This was the fourth time. Four crashes, four times I have ended up in this hospital bed. Every single time, Vivian never even gave me a proper apology. Suddenly I wanted to laugh, but my mouth was pulled tight and stinging from tears. Only big, heavy tears kept falling, pouring down like water from a broken faucet. Even now, he was still protecting her. "What about me?" My voice was very soft. "If I don't blame her, who am I supposed to blame? Myself? It's my leg that might never walk again, not hers! And you're still making excuses for her!" Lucas furrowed his brow, his voice laced with irritation. "Emma, I already told you she didn't do it on purpose. Why do you have to keep harping on this?" He paused, and his words carried an undercurrent of blame. "Besides, if you hadn't grabbed the steering wheel from her, the accident never would have happened in the first place. Haven't you ever stopped to think about what you did wrong?" It felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head. All the blood in my body went ice cold. But just a moment later, I laughed, and it looked uglier than crying. Whenever Vivian was involved, I was always the one in the wrong. My heart, already still and dead, felt like someone had ripped it open by force, then ground it brutally into powder. I closed my eyes, my voice hollow and lifeless. "I'm tired. You can go now." Lucas parted his lips to apologize, but in the end he said nothing. As he turned to leave, his footsteps were actually a little unsteady. For the next three days, he barely left my side. He personally fed me the bitter herbal medicine, cooked all my favorite dishes in different ways, and even set up a folding bed next to my hospital bed, jumping awake at the slightest stir in the night. But I was just a soulless puppet. I opened my mouth when he fed me the medicine and got up when he helped me. I did not say an extra word and never even looked at him once. He finally lost his patience, and only when he said the words "I'm going to have a fake wedding with Vivian" did I finally react. "Okay, I'll go," I said, my tone still as flat as ever. He rushed to explain, his voice laced with an unnoticeable fluster. "Emma, the Gray family has set their sights on Vivian. They want to force her to marry into their family. As her brother, I can't just sit back and watch her ruin her life." "So I want to announce publicly that we're divorced, and then I'll have a wedding with Vivian. But trust me, this wedding is fake. The divorce is just a temporary expedient. Once the Gray family matter is settled, everything will go back to the way it was." Hearing this, I suddenly laughed softly. It wasn't self-mockery, nor was it mocking him. It was the genuine laugh at someone who had finally breathed a sigh of relief. Ethan was finally making his move. Lucas said the Gray family is a man-eating hellhole, but to me, it was the only piece of driftwood that could help me escape this suffocating prison.
