‘Please, please don’ t die John, ’ Aria sobbed beside them. ‘Please come back to me.’
Emma opened her eyes, noticing a commotion in the distance. She glanced at Declan and motioned for him to go and see what was happening, before she closed her eyes again and continued to do all she could to bring John back from the brink of death.
Very slowly, she began to feel a stronger heartbeat beneath her fingers and so she released her hands and let them hover over his chest, moving them along his torso until they stopped over his head.
‘He has a head injury, Aria,’ Emma whispered, ‘But his heart is strong. He needs to get to our hospital pronto.’
Aria nodded as Emma slowly stood up. Soldiers immediately rushed to his side and lifted his body onto a stretcher, carrying him to the nearby truck.
