Chapter Five

The Hidden Door I barely slept that night. The key sat on my nightstand, catching the dim moonlight that filtered through the curtains. I kept turning it over in my fingers, reading the word engraved into the metal again and again. DOWNSTAIRS. The game changes here. I didn't know what it meant. But I knew I couldn't ignore it. By the time the first gray light of morning crept through the windows, I had made a decision. I found Lorenzo early, before breakfast. He was already in the study, a cup of coffee cooling beside him, his attention fixed on a stack of reports. I placed the key on the desk in front of him. "Someone slipped this into my bag." He set down his pen and picked up the key, turning it over in his fingers. His expression shifted. For the first time since I'd met him, I saw something flicker behind his gray eyes. "Where did you get this?" "In the car after the meeting. I didn't see anyone put it there." He studied the key for a long moment, his jaw tightening as he read the engraving. "DOWNSTAIRS," he said slowly. He was quiet for a moment. Too quiet. "You know what that means?" He set the key down and leaned back in his chair, his gaze distant. "This estate is over two hundred years old," he said. "Every Don added something. Passages. Rooms. Vaults. Some were sealed." "What do you mean, sealed?" He met my eyes. "There are parts of this house that haven't been opened in decades. Your father knows things about this estate that even I don't." I stared at the key. "So where do we start?" "We search." We searched for hours. We found nothing. Every hallway. Every door. Every lock. The key fit nowhere. I tried every door I could find, my fingers aching from the effort, my frustration growing with each failed attempt. "Maybe it doesn't lead anywhere," I said, my voice sharp with exhaustion. "Maybe it's just a game." Lorenzo said nothing. He kept searching and walking, his eyes scanning the walls, the floors, the ceilings. Then something caught my eye. At the end of a narrow hallway on the second floor, there was a door I hadn't noticed before. It was smaller than the others, darker, the wood old and worn. It blended into the wall so perfectly that I might have missed it if I hadn't been looking. I stopped and stared at it. "What's behind that?" Lorenzo followed my gaze. His expression shifted. "An old room. Your father sealed it years ago.” "Why?" He was quiet for a moment. "I don't know. Your father ordered it sealed. He never explained why." I walked toward it, my footsteps echoing in the narrow hallway. The air was colder here, heavier, thick with dust and time. I ran my fingers along the edge of the door, feeling the roughness of the old wood beneath my fingertips. I pulled out the key and inserted it into the lock. It slid in perfectly. My breath caught in my throat. My heart hammered against my ribs as I turned it. Click. The lock opened. I looked back at Lorenzo. His face was unreadable, his gray eyes fixed on the door. I pushed it open. The hinges groaned in protest, the sound echoing through the silent hallway. Darkness stared back at me, cold and still. I couldn't see anything beyond the threshold. I stepped inside.
