The sun-girl broke the surface, gasping. She could see only blue-green waves, an indigo lining of land. “Isa!” she cried. She dipped back under, searching the water for some sign of him. Another wave slammed into her then, tossing her toward the island. Ilana dove deeper into the water, shouting his name. “Isa!” But again, the tidal currents dragged her to the land. She collapsed onto the shore, coughing up clear water, her body wracked with sobs. “Please,” she wept. “Not again.” I can’t lose him again. She lifted herself up, frantically scanning her surroundings. The sky, the land, the sea. There were only rolling waves and rolling hills as far as the eye could see. No sand, only soft grass. Luminous aurora overhead, lacy sea foam tumbling onto the green. “You needn’t worry.” Ilana
