Chapter 3

1030 Words
The affair was never meant to be a love story. It was supposed to be an escape. A quick conversation. A few afternoons hidden from everyone. That's all. Feelings have a way of ignoring the rules people make to control them. Every time Emily told herself it was over, Damian found another way to make her smile. Every time Damian promised himself he would let her go, he found another reason to hold on. They had become each other's addiction. Damian's driver, Victor Benson, had worked for the Kingsley family for twenty years. He had seen Damian grow from a businessman into one of the richest men in Westbridge. He had also seen many women come and go in Damian's life. There were actresses, models, lawyers, business executives, and even a princess from a European country. None of them lasted longer than six months. Emily was different. Victor noticed it away. Whenever Damian was going to meet Emily, he dressed carefully. He stopped answering business calls when they were together. His laughter was real, not just polite. Surprisingly, he smiled when he was alone. One evening, Victor asked Damian a question that had been on his mind. "Sir?" "Yes?" "Can I say something?" Damian looked up from the window. "You can say anything." Victor hesitated. "I've never seen you this happy." Damian chuckled. "I didn't think it was that obvious." "It is." Victor paused. "Happiness built on someone else's pain rarely lasts." The words hung in the air. Damian didn't respond. Because down, he knew Victor was right. Emily was good at pretending. She smiled at neighborhood gatherings. She hosted dinner parties. She went to business events with Daniel. Everyone complimented them. "You two are perfect." "You still look like newlyweds." "I hope my marriage is as happy as yours." Emily smiled politely every time. If only they knew. Every compliment felt like an accusation. Every photograph felt like a lie. Sometimes she wondered if everyone else was pretending too. Maybe every perfect marriage has hidden cracks. Maybe every happy couple had secrets. Maybe she was just trying to justify her actions. One afternoon, Damian invited Emily to a quiet lake house he owned an hour outside the city. Hardly anyone knew about the property. It had belonged to his parents. The lake house was simple with walls, a stone fireplace, and a wraparound porch. Emily saw family photographs on the shelves. A younger Damian is laughing with his parents. A teenage Damian is fishing with his father. His mother hugs him after a school graduation. Emily smiled. "I've never seen these." "I don't usually show anyone." She looked at him with surprise. "Why me?" Damian took a breath. "Because I trust you." Those words touched her heart. For an hour, Damian became someone she had never known. He talked about losing his parents. About building his company to distract himself from grief. About using parties, travel, and meaningless relationships to avoid loneliness. "I thought I didn't need anyone," he said. Emily reached out. Gently squeezed his hand. "You were just protecting yourself." He looked into her eyes. "Then you came along." They just sat there in silence. The silence said everything words couldn't. Emily often wondered what had happened to the woman she used to be. She used to judge people who cheated on their spouses. She thought affairs were choices made by people. Now she understood that betrayal rarely started in a bedroom. It often started in conversations. In feeling understood. In being noticed. In receiving attention at home. That realization didn't excuse her actions. It made her guilt even heavier. That evening, Damian stood beside the fireplace. "Emily." She looked up. "What if we stopped hiding?" She froze. "What do you mean?" "I mean, what if you left Daniel?" Her heart pounded. "You can't ask me that." "I'm asking because I love you." The room became quiet. Those three words hung in the air. Emily had imagined hearing them times. Now that they had spoken, they terrified her. She closed her eyes. "Don't." "Why?" "Because once those words are spoken, nothing stays the same." Damian stepped closer. "I've never loved anyone before." She could hear the sincerity in his voice. It only made everything harder. With tears in her eyes, she whispered the words she had feared most. "I love you too." For a moment, they didn't notice the storm outside. They didn't realize that with those confessions, they had crossed a line. What they didn't know was that life had already started demanding a price for their happiness. Across the city, Daniel Carter sat alone in his office. His phone lay on the desk before him. On the screen was a photograph of Emily smiling. He stared at it quietly. "I'll make this right," he whispered to himself. He still thought his biggest challenge was fixing a neglected marriage. He had no idea another man had already taken a place in his wife's heart. Damian didn't realize that every secret leaves behind traces. Soon, those tiny traces would form a picture. When Daniel Carter finally saw that picture, he wouldn't react with rage. He would react with something more dangerous. Patience. The First Crack Daniel Carter had a way of doing things that helped him build a big company. He did not rush into projects like contractors did. Daniel. Thought about every little detail before he made a move. This is why people trusted him with projects that were worth a lot of money. Now, Daniel was using this patience to look at his marriage. He did not accuse his wife, Emily, of anything. He did not ask her any questions. He just watched her. Paid attention to what she was doing. This is when he started to notice things that he had not seen before. It started on a Tuesday morning when Emily was making breakfast. She was humming a tune. Daniel stood in the doorway. Watched her. It had been a time since he had heard her sing. "You seem happy today," he said to her. Emily turned around. Smiled at him. "I guess I slept well," she said. Daniel smiled back at her.
