Mercury POV
November 22nd, 2006
I awoke this morning, energized and joyful. My life is full of happiness. Parents who love me unconditionally, a great sister, and a lively newborn brother who is only nine days old.
When there's a baby in the family, who doesn't enjoy it? I'm sure I do.
Jonas is the center of our little family's universe. The apple of my father’s eye, as he had always desired to have a son. Although he has two daughters, which has made him a cruel Alpha who protects his princesses from womanizing men, he cherishes us as if we were jewels or rubies.
Today, Saturday, my mother, Daria, and I had planned a picnic at a nearby lake. After Jonas was born, my mother grew tired of being cooped up in the house all day, so I suggested we go on a picnic. Just something fun for the girls to do together.
So I gathered my towel and went to her room, where she was getting dressed in her bathing suit. Despite having just given birth, my mother's body was in great shape. Her sunflower blonde hair hung over her shoulders, and her suit clung to her curves. She was breathtaking.
“Mom, I'm ready,” I announced as I entered her room.
“Hold on a second, sweetie. I still need to leave a list of things for your father to look after while I'm gone. Could you please ensure that your sister is dressed and ready? I'll meet you out front once I'm finished.” She responded with her back to me.
“Of course, mom!”
I closed the door behind me as I exited her room and proceeded to the second level, where Daria's room was located.
Knock
Knock
I knocked on her door twice. “Daria?” I rapped on the door once more. “Mom sent me to make sure you're set for the lake,” she, on the other hand, did not answer. I pressed my ear against the door, listening for any movement from within her chamber.
It was quiet, but as a werewolf, I was able to hear it. Soft sobs emitted a muffled sound from inside her room. I knocked once more and waited for an answer, which never came.
“All right, Daria, I'm coming in!” I immediately observed her resting figure on the bed when I entered her room. I leaped into action and dashed for her without hesitation. “Hey, what's the matter? Are you all right?” I enquired, my hand resting on hers.
She sniffled and wiped the back of her palm across her face. “I think I'm going to die, sissy!” She drew her legs further closer to her chest.
My brows wrinkled in bewilderment. “What do you mean, you're going to die?” I inquired, my face flushed with surprise and fear. I took her hand in mine as I drew closer to the bed. “What's the matter?”
As she leaned into my touch, her eyes grew as big as saucers. “I’m bleeding.” She remarked, startled.
She was speaking in a nonsensical manner. I inspected her physique in response to her outcry. And there wasn't a drop of blood on the floor, the bed, or her body. So, where is the blood? “Daria, you're making me nervous. Besides, there isn't any blood anywhere.”
My sister began crying once more. Like a burst torrent, tears poured down her tear-streaked cheeks. I could see she was terrified, and I was too because I couldn't locate any blood for the life of me.
“Perhaps I should call Mom and tell her what's going on.” Standing up from the side of the bed, I suggested. But she quickly grabbed my hand and drew me back toward her.
She responded with a shake of her head. “Please. I don't want her here.”
“All right, but you have to tell me where the blood is since I don't see any.” She sniffled and wiped her tears again as she nodded.
Something was in the air, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was. Some sort of metallic scent filled my nose. 'Wait...is that blood?' I sniffed; my nose c****d. 'But where was ?' Something clicked at that point.
“Is there blood down there, Daria?” With trepidation, I inquired. I was too embarrassed to inquire about my sister's period. That was, after all, the only logical conclusion.
She kept a wary eye on me. “How did you figure that out?”
That explains why there was no blood. Daria wasn't bleeding from a wound; she was finally a young girl, and she was seeing her moon blood for the first time. Understandably, she's scared.
I made a gentle chuckle. It wasn't so much directed at her as it was at her innocence. She felt she was going to die because her private part was bleeding.
“Can you tell me why you're laughing? This is a life-or-death crisis. You think it's hilarious that I'm dying here?” Her voice trembled as she frowned.
I burst out laughing. My gut clenched from laughing so hard. Tears streamed down my cheeks, and I couldn't stop laughing no matter how hard I tried. I eventually began wheezing, and Daria sat beside me, irritated.
“I’m sorry for laughing at you, Daria. I didn't mean to laugh.” I told her as I continued to snicker in my hands. “Listen; you will not die. In reality, you're fine.” I wiped the last tear off my cheeks.
“So, what's the matter with me? How come I'm bleeding from the spot where I urinate?”
‘Child, you need to stop, or I will lose control of my laughter. You're going to die because you're bleeding from your lower abdomen. You're too funny!'
“Let me tell you what I'm going to do. I'm heading for mum, and she'll be able to explain what's going on, okay?!”
“No,” she implored, her eyes welling up with tears.
“Don't worry, Daria. It's nothing to be concerned about. Mother will know exactly how to manage the problem and will advise you on what to do when it happens again.” I replied truthfully. I wasn't much different when I initially acquired my moon blood, even though I was older. With the exception of thinking I was going to die. But I didn't want to go to school or hang around with other people.
“When it happens again, what do you mean?” Her tears, like the shock, never left her eyes.
I didn’t answer, however. Instead, I dashed out the door, up the stairs, and into my mother's room without knocking, nearly knocking her to the ground.
“Mercury, don't you remember what I said about running around the house? What if I were your father?” She reprimanded as she re-established her balance.
I inhaled deeply and sat up straight. “Please accept my apologies, mother. It’s Daria, something happened and she needs you.”
When my mother heard my sister's name, she dashed from her room and into my sister's, trailed by me.
Mother approached the bed and took Daria's hand in hers as she sat on the side. “Tell Mommy what's wrong, sweetheart.” As she stroked Daria's unkempt hair, she cooed affectionately.
Daria sighed and turned to face my mother, tears in her eyes and a sad look on her pale face.
She cried out, “Mommy.”
“Mom, Daria thinks she'll die because of her moon blood,” I muttered.
Daria would never have told my mother what was wrong if it hadn't been for my intervention. Drama queen with a snobbish attitude. No one would ever know if she were in excruciating pain. As a result, when I knocked on the door, she didn't answer, and when my mother inquired about the situation, she didn't respond.
But there was one thing about her that I admired though; she was a very secretive person. Our parents were never informed about some of the mischiefs I was involved in as a child because of her tight lips.
That I most appreciated.
“Oh, sweetie!” Mom gave her a kiss on the forehead. “Don't worry, Mommy will look after you,” Daria responded with a nod, and mom exited the room, returning shortly after with a bag full of stuff.
“Mercury, if you could kindly wait outside while I speak with your sister,” she said.
“OK, mom,” I replied and walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind me.
Mother emerged from Daria's room with a smile on her face a short while later, probably amused that Daria thought she'd die since she got her moon blood.
Her writhing in agony at the prospect of death was fascinating to watch.
“Come on, Mercury. It'll just be me and you at the lake since your sister isn't well. I'll go to the kitchen and fetch some sandwiches and fruits, and then we'll go to the lake.”
We took the stairwell together after I nodded. It was almost midday, so the house wasn't as crowded. Except for the omegas, who are going about their business. Everyone else was either at work or in a leisure location for the weekend.
On Saturdays, my mother would regularly take Daria and me to the lake. Especially when the weather was scorching. We would occasionally take a few of the kids with us, but generally, it was just mom, Daria, and myself. Today, though, it was just me and my mother. But I'm not complaining because it means we'll have more time together.
We finally arrived at the lake and spread the food out on the blanket. I couldn't wait, jumping in the water creating a cannon ball, and splashing water all over the place.
“Mercury, sweetheart, be careful not to injure yourself!”
