Episode 03-Claiming my wolf

Mercury POV My eyes had only been closed for an hour before I jumped out of bed in a panic, damped in sweat. Looking around the room, I relaxed when the familiar obnoxious scene came to view. I inhaled deeply and released, laying back in bed. I closed my eyes again and took a deep breath, praying to the Moon Goddess for courage and strength. Because I'll undoubtedly require it. Then later, I awoke with a strange feeling in my head. It wasn't so much a headache as it was an overwhelming sense of safety. It was as if someone was keeping an eye on me. "Hello, Mercury." A soft, unfamiliar voice called my name. I jumped up in bed, freaked, and looked around the room. However, I was disappointed to discover that no one else was in my room, only the thin white see-through curtains blowing in the wind. "Is anyone there?" In a scared, timid voice, I inquired. I certainly didn't anticipate hearing my name called. That desperate desire to flee the room! Scared isn't even the word I'd use to describe my pounding heart. Or the way my skin pricked with goosebumps. Then the strangest thing happened: I was no longer in my bedroom, but rather sitting in an open field. "Is anyone there?" I became frantic, almost panicked. I drew my legs to my chest, my breathing becoming uncontrollable. The gentle breeze blowing through the thin fabric of my nightgown. I'm actually crying now, you see. I had no idea what was going on, and now I've awoken in a place surrounded by flowers and trees. That was probably supposed to relax my muscles, but it didn't work. There was even a lake to my left that reflected the blue sky. Furthermore, I had no idea how far I was from my house. Unexpectedly, a compelling surge of power engulfed me in waves. It was so powerful that it made me want to bow to it, as I'd been taught. That's when I noticed it. A stunning wolf with grey-white fur, glossy and thick, and deep blue eyes. Trotting so gracefully. It eventually came over to my side and sat, resting its head on my lap. "Hello, Mercury." That voice had reappeared. So I didn't assume to hearing someone calling my name. "It’s you!" In disbelief, I exclaimed. "I wasn't dreaming about hearing my name. But how are you communicating with me? What brings me here? What and where is this place?" "Yes, it's me, and you didn't." The wolf's response caused goosebumps all over my body. "How in the hell was any of this happening, and where in the hell am I?" The wolf sat up on its hind legs and chuckled gently. "Listen, I know you have a lot of questions, and I promise to answer as many as I can, but first, I'll go over the fundamentals. First and foremost, my name is Serena, and I am your wolf-" "My wolf? But how come you're not just in my head?" Confusion accentuated my grave expression. I had no idea what was going on, but Selena assured me that she would answer my questions. None of this made any sense. Two things sustained me for a long time. Following a life of torment, two things promise calm and contentment. Finding my mate and claiming my wolf. Knowing I'm not alone now that I've found my wolf has given me some peace of mind. And that made me smile. "Mercury, here's the deal: You have something unique to offer. You are unlike any other Shimmerhelm she-wolf." The wolf gave me a sidelong glance before shifting her gaze to the lake. Serena hesitated for a moment, and I took a breather to take time in processing the information. “What makes you think I'm unique?” Apart from being beaten, tortured, and worked to the bone like a slave, I don't see anything that distinguishes me from any other she-wolf in our pack. Yeah, I'm a one-of-a-kind individual. "Don't undersell yourself." "Wait…you can read my thoughts?" Is this really happening right now? So many questions were rushing through my mind. "Remember, I'm your wolf. I understand exactly what you're thinking. As you are half of me, I am half of you." This is really too disturbing. I understand that our wolves are a part of us, but this is the first time I've heard something like this. It's completely strange. "What else can you tell me, Serena?" I folded my legs beneath myself and tucked a few stray strands of hair behind my ear as I turned my entire body to her. Her brow furrowed. "I've said far too much already. All you need to know is that all of your questions will be answered one of these days, and everything will make sense. For the time being, you must begin training to become the Alpha, which I am confident you can be to lead your people." I sneered. "Me? Alpha? Of which pack?" I sarcastically inquired. Now she’s simply making fun of me. Telling me I'm going to be Alpha. "Yeah, right?" I would have doubted anyone who told me that wolves can sigh or get bored with their human half. But seeing Serena irritated with my ignorance, well, let's just say I'm a believer. Then again, what did she expect? Take a look at my life; it's nothing exceptional. Furthermore, who the hell is going to pay attention to me? "Serena, listen. I know you're trying to help and all that." I stated as I broke a bit of grass in my hand and tossed it aside, "I'm not capable of being Alpha. No one was ever going to take me seriously. Especially not the Blood Moon pack's members." I confessed seriously. It may appear like I have no faith in myself, but that is not the case. No one would accept someone who lives in her own attic, sleeps on a mattress the size of a slice of bread, and dresses in used clothes; as their Alpha. "Have you ever considered that the Moon Goddess might have made a mistake? Is it possible that you've been paired with the incorrect person? While I'm overjoyed to have you as my wolf, it's weird to think that my wolf is braver than I am." "I don't see it that way!" She expressed her displeasure with my remark. "On the contrary-" "Tell me something. Being here, in this field, what do you feel?" Serena interjected, interrupting me in the middle of my statement. I'm not sure how that question was relevant, but I responded to it regardless. "If I'm being completely honest. This is the first time in two years that I've felt at ease." My gaze was drawn to the palm of my hand. Feeling self-conscious all of a sudden. Serena's sorrowful glances were palpable. But I couldn't force myself to look her in the eyes. Not because I’m afraid of getting punished. But it was because I didn't have a shred of dignity left. "Mercury, close your eyes. And don't be afraid to tell me how you really feel." "Wasn't that something I just did?" "That's true, but it pales in comparison to what's going on inside your head right now. Years of violence and mistreatment. I'm sure you're experiencing more than just tranquility right now." She pointed out. Incredulous, I looked at her. Her fur blew in the wind, flapping her ears like a small pup. Nevertheless, she wasn't a small pup though. No, Serena was an average-sized wolf. Like an Alpha wolf. Anyway, I closed my eyes and let my mind drift away, blocking out any other noises. It seemed as if time had stopped, and my heart had settled into a steady rhythm, no longer pounding furiously. There were no strong winds, and no birds were whistling. The true meaning of silence and peace. As Serena predicted, the silence of my surroundings triggered a rage I'd never experienced before. A desire to exact vengeance on those who have wronged me. I'm determined to reclaim my rightful position as Alpha. Deep down, there was something else that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Everything was coming to me at once, and I didn't know which one to concentrate on. "Mercury, take some deep breaths." Through our mind-link, I heard Serena's soothing voice. That's exactly what I did. I inhaled deeply, allowing all of my emotions to dissipate into thin air. It was almost as if they hadn't been there at all. "That’s good!" She complimented me. I took another deep breath and exhaled slowly, noticing that the tightness in my body had dissipated and that my emotions were no longer as bottled up as they had been. "What was that?" I asked, taken aback by the experience. I was surprised at how quickly she was able to calm me down. "That, Mercury, was the strengthening of our bond. Tell me, how are you feeling now." "I'm in awe of how wonderful I feel. Not so withdrawn and more adamant than before. Why, though, is that?" It's hard for me to ignore how fantastic it feels to be less vulnerable and defenseless. It feels great, to be honest. "That is exactly what I want to hear. Now, if you need this strength, close your eyes and take a deep breath while thinking about all the things you have to do." With a smile, I nodded. I wasn't terrified anymore for the first time in a long time. "I appreciate it, Serena.” "No need to, that was all you. I merely aided in unlocking a part of your true potential. Mercury, you're a powerful woman, and I'm looking forward to all of the wonderful things we'll do together. I'm afraid I'll have to leave, but it won't be far." I was saddened by the fact that I would have to return to that horrible place. I won't be alone this time. Serena would be by my side, directing me. "Also, you are not permitted to tell anyone about our chat or this place. Please keep it a secret." I nodded my response. "All right, then, it's time to get out of bed."
