Chapter 12 - Frustration

443 Words
Kari slowly started to regain her senses. She'd continued sleeping even without the injection. Her body needed the recovery time. Del had been spot on about that. She still had no idea where she was. She could see out of a window but only just. It was frosted for privacy. No one had made a move to treat her wrongly, so escape wasn't on the agenda, but answers were. Getting up out of bed, slowly, she decided to start probing her three jailors. It was hard to think of them as anything else. They were courteous but held an air that let her know she was being prevented from leaving for her own good. It would be easier if she knew what she was hiding from. Del had admitted he had no idea what was going on. She had no reason not to believe him. Patience seemed the only way forward. It was about time for Martha to come tidy things up. Martha had been with Del a very long time. She refused to reveal how long saying you should never ask a lady her age. She was very kind and had been charged with taking care of Kari. Martha had no other family to speak of. Just Del. Martha came through the door right on time. You could set a clock by her. "I brought you some breakfast, Miss Kari." "Thank you so much, Martha. You are the kindest person I have met in this town." "You know it's my pleasure to take care of any of Mr. Del's friends." "Well, you know, I'd really like to know where we are? Why I'm here? Are my other friends ok?" "Now Miss Kari, you know I don't have all those answers, but it must be both serious and important if you were put in my charge." "Why is that?" "Because, Mr. Del ain't never had me take care of anyone that wasn't important, in trouble, or both. I'm sorry I don't have specifics. I can't promise that I'd be able to tell you, but I have told you the truth. Please, believe we are on your side." "I do. I promise I do. I've just seen a lot of change recently, and I feel like my life is out of my control. I guess I hate feeling so helpless." "I know it sucks, dear. But we can make the best of it." She produced a couple of those airplane bottles of wine. Kari laughed out loud, "They really don't make people like you anymore!" "No, dear. They don't." They each finished their little bottles and began to discuss how delicious the breakfast looked.
