Misty knew these mountain trails by heart and even after three years of being away not much had changed. She rushed through one of her favourite paths she always used to take when she was on break from working at the animal centre.
“Stop following me!” Misty growled out at the man close on her heels. She knew Jake was right behind her so she didn’t even bother turning to yell at him. Instead, Misty pushed forward until she entered the small clearing with a little mountain stream that was her safe haven.
Upset and feeling sorry for herself Misty fell to her knees in the soft grass and cried. She had been lied to her entire life, believing that she was ignored all of those years because it was her fault. But now? Having all of those eyes on her, their thoughts practically screaming in her face was just as unbearable.
There was a snap of a twig, followed by a low hissing sound as Misty sat up and rubbed her eyes dry.
“Wha-” She definitely wasn’t expecting to see Duncan in a standoff with Jake, both of their eyes glowing in the shadows of the forest trees. “You’re one of them too?”
Misty’s voice was soft, broken in a way as Duncan turned to look at her. His features went from aggressive to soft at the sight of Misty’s tears. He slowly moved forward, with Jake close behind just radiating tension.
“I am a Shifter, yes Misty,” Jake kneeled down, reaching a hand out as Jake growled under his breath. Misty scoffed at the sound and rolled her eyes, feeling a bit more like her normal self.
She reached out and took Duncan’s hand, gasping softly at the warmth and comfort she felt tingling across her skin. She had so many questions, wanted to know absolutely everything and exactly what that meant for her and this newfound knowledge of being this, Omega. But before Misty could open her mouth she was yanked forward into Duncan’s arms.
It all happened so fast, she managed to catch herself on those hard, chiselled abs as the young man holding her chuckled at the sight. Misty shivered involuntarily, subconsciously wanting to lean into that delicious warmth as a hand drew across the back of her neck.
“I have always felt your pull Misty, I’ve wanted to make you my mate for years now,” Duncan whispered as he pulled the shivering young woman closer, nuzzling into the crook of her neck and breathing deeply. The sound he made was nothing short of s****l, a deep moan of pleasure that caused Misty to gasp.
But something wasn’t quite right, as if a piece of some large and intricate puzzle was missing. Misty pushed away from Duncan with a slightly confused frown as she opened her mouth to speak. Except, being rudely interrupted once again, Jake had his arms around Misty and pulled her away in the blink of an eye.
“How dare you make a claim against your Queen! I should gut you right here for such insolence!” Jake seethed, holding Misty against his chest tightly. His entire body was tense as if ready to pounce, and that was enough to snap Misty out of her surprised stupor.
“Stop!” She bellowed, pushing out of Jake’s arms and watching as both men froze on the spot. Misty had no idea if they were simply listening to her, or if there was something else at play. “I have just had my entire life turned upside down, cut me some slack okay???”
Misty crossed her arms over her ample chest, not missing the heated gaze Duncan was giving her. It made her blush, knowing that she was the object of someone’s desire when all her life she thought she was undesirable. Of course, that caused Jake to start growling again, but Misty was quickly getting used to her new bodyguard’s antics.
“Stop that Jake, it's annoying, I’m going home!” Misty grumbled as she turned on her heel and began her trek back down the mountain.
It only took about ten minutes, normally, but with two large men wanting to be as close as physically possible to Misty it took nearly half an hour to reach the bottom. Any time Duncan reached out to hold Misty’s hand or rub her back, Jake tried to bully his way in between to ‘protect’ her. Frankly, it was ridiculous and if this is what it meant to be an Omega Misty had no clue why it was such a coveted role.
“We’re here, now go away!” Misty exclaimed as she jogged over to her car, keys in hand to unlock the door and slip in while the two men growled at each other. The distraction was enough for her to lock the doors and slip the key into the ignition and start the car.
“Misty, where are you going? I must accompany you.” Jake was knocking on the window, eyes wide in worry and pouting slightly. Misty thought that he looked like a kicked puppy, and for a moment she almost let him inside of the car.
“I’m going home! I can’t deal with this stuff right now!” She told the two men outside of her car as she threw it into gear.
Misty was glad that everyone had left, the parking lot now being empty and quiet. She hadn’t been gone for more than an hour, or so she thought until the clock in her car told her otherwise. Three hours up the mountain, what the hell did that mean? She shook her head and pushed it out of her mind, instead focusing on heading to her destination before Jake, or Duncan, could follow her.
She had said she was going home, but seeing her mother was the last thing that she wanted. No, Misty was going to go see the one person that she always ran to when she needed someone to b*tch to, especially if crying in the mountains didn’t help.
Misty was heading over to Micheal’s house and hoping that he was home alone.
