WHAT SHE DIDN'T KNOW

ALMIRA I instinctively stepped back, pulling Avery behind me the moment I heard more footsteps down the hallway. The destroyed bedroom door had barely stopped swinging when two familiar figures rushed inside. Aquil and Sebastian came further inside. I knew it was them, but my chest heart wouldn't stop thumping so fast. "It's just us," Sebastian said immediately, lifting both hands slightly. Aquil's eyes swept over me before moving to Avery. “Almira, it's alright. It's just us." He repeated, approaching slowly. Only then did I realize I had unconsciously taken a fighting stance...and they were wary of me? I slowly relaxed my shoulders, but my chest still feels tight. After a few moment, I saw a few warriors appear behind them, all alertly looking around. Sebastian glanced at the unconscious man lying amid the broken door. "Take him away," he ordered, still glaring at the rogue. "Bind him properly. I don't care how many chains you need, but make sure he doesn't escape." "Yes, Beta!" Two warriors immediately surrounded the unconscious intruder, shackling both his wrists and ankles before dragging him away. Another pair began inspecting the other nearby rooms, leaving us be. "I..." I trailed off, still feeling lost. Everyone turned toward me, waiting for what I was about to say. "I-I have no idea how I did that." I managed, staring at the broken door then back at my own hands again. My brows furrowed. "They're calling me the Guardian Wolf. What is a Guardian Wolf?" Neither Aquil nor Sebastian answered my question. Instead, Aquil entered the room fully and his gaze searched every inch of me. He pressed his hand on my shoulder, still looking at any wound. . "Are you hurt?" he asked urgently. "Did he scratch you? Did that bastard touch you anywhere?" He carefully turned one of my arms over before checking the other. "Almira, answer me." "I'm fine..." I answered awkwardly, and couldn't even look at him in the eyes. He didn't seem convinced and cupped my cheek. This time, I slowly stepped away from him. His hands fell back to his sides, surprise flashing across his face before realization hit him. The worry in his eyes remained but now mixed with guilt I never really thought of seeing. He cleared his throat. "Right, I apologize." He didn't attempt to touch me again. Instead, he crouched beside Avery. "Hey, you alright, Avi?" Avery nodded ever so enthusiastically and started launching into an excited explanation. "Mama go boom! The bad man go whoosh!” He demonstrated what had happened, even throwing himself backward onto the mattress, pretending to crash exactly the way the attacker had. "So cool!" He exclaimed with full excitement. Aquil couldn't help smiling while Sebastian even let out a quiet chuckle. I was the only one completely bewildered. No one even questioned it or looked remotely surprised of what I did. Had they all forgotten I was an omega? An omega whose wolf could barely remain shifted beneath a full moon and an omega who should have died against that man. Instead... I had knocked him unconscious with one kick. Why was everyone acting as though this was normal? Sebastian looked toward Aquil. "She might have lost her memories, but her body seemed to remember." Aquil nodded once before he looked back at me. "We'll explain later, okay? For now, let me bring you back to my room." I Instinctively looked toward Sebastian. Seeing him made me feel safer. Unfortunately, Aquil had already turned toward him. "Sebastian." "Yes, Alpha." "Double the guards on the upper floor. I don't want anyone reaching this hallway again." Sebastian nodded. "I'll choose the warriors myself." Our eyes met only briefly before Sebastian left with the other warriors. I suddenly felt disappointed but didn't say anything else. Aquil gestured toward the hallway. "This way." I had no choice but to follow him, holding Avery's hand who is blissfully unaware of what was happening. Once again, I found myself inside his bedroom... or our bedroom. The thought alone still made me uncomfortable but it was my reality at the moment. Aquil excused himself shortly afterward to help with the aftermath of the attack, leaving Avery and me alone once again. Avery happily played with his toys that was stored in a box at the side of the room, scattering it on the floor. Guardian Wolf. The man called me that and everyone seem to know about it. Nothing seemed different with my body, but somehow it now carried enough strength to knock a werewolf down. The only thing that felt different was my wolf felt closer. In the past, I could barely sense her existence. Sometimes I wondered whether I truly had a wolf at all. Whenever other werewolves spoke about communicating with theirs, I could never relate as mine always remained silent and whenever it tries to communicate with me, its voice felt so distant. But now... Something had changed. I turned toward Avery. "Avery." He immediately looked up, "Mama?" I hesitated immediately. How exactly did one ask a toddler something like this? "What is a Guardian Wolf?" His expressions brightened instantly and pointed at me. "You!" I pointed at myself. "Me?" He nodded enthusiastically. I chuckled awkwardly. “Thank you, Avi." He went back to his toys, now looking proud for 'helping' me. A knock from the door cut my thoughts. I was worried for a moment but Avery happily dashed toward the door and opened it himself. Aquil entered carrying a wooden tray. “You might get hungry waiting.” I looked at the tray. There was fresh bread, a bowl of cut fruits and cheese to the side. Avery bounced happily. "Snack!" Aquil chuckled before placing everything onto the small table. "There you go. Almira, please get some too.” Avery wasted no time grabbing a pastry. His cheeks puffed adorably as he began eating, making me smile a bit. Avery grabbed another bread and hurried towards me, handing me the food. I smiled, “Thank you, Avi." He went back to the table and started eating happily. I simply watched him. Every expression, every smile and little habits. He truly looked like a mixture of Aquil and me. A happy version of us. It was still difficult to believe. Aquil remained standing nearby. "The fight is over," he finally said, glancing toward his son before looking back at me, "Don't worry. I'll have you moved to another room later when everything is settled." I quietly nodded. "Thank you, Alpha." Neither of us spoke afterward. It looked like he wanted to say something else, bit couldn't because Avery is around. True to his word, we were quickly moved to a different room after a couple of hours. It was near his room but it will suffice. Aquil escorted us himself and he grabbed Avery with him so I can rest properly. “If you need anything, don't hesitate to call for anyone, okay?” he said before leaving. The door closed and finally, I was aline again. I let out a deep sigh. I couldn't keep relying on everyone else's reluctant explanations. I needed answers, and I think my wolf is the only one capable of giving them. I sat cross-legged on the bed and closed my eyes.I had no idea how other werewolves communicated with theirs but simply copied what little I'd heard others describe over the years. Breathe, reach for my wolf and listen. A strange warmth spread through my chest. My heartbeat slowed and the sounds around me slowly faded. And then a flash of what looked like a memory. I saw towering trees rushing past me. It was early morning or spring. My gaze lowered and saw someone was holding my hand. I looked ahead of me and saw Aquil. He was laughing, a carefree laugh I have never seen before. His fingers intertwined with mine as he pulled me deeper into the woods. He said something I couldn't catch, but I heard myself laughing, as brightly and carefree as he did. His smile was so warm, so full of affection... My heart thumped fast again and pain suddenly exploded in my head. "Ah...!" I clutched my head, suddenly pulled back to reality. My vision spun, feeling the pain pushing from each sides of my head. The pain intensified and I couldn't help but double over, curling myself while holding both my temples. "Almira!" Aquil rushed inside, and suddenly in front of me. I looked at his panicked expression while I curled on the floor. He dropped beside me without hesitation. “What happened?" "It hurts..."
