CHAPTER FIVE A WEB OF LIES

1099 Words
It was raining heavily as I walked down the street,I was lost in thoughts about how everything in my life had gone off track. People looked at me, but it didn’t bother me. Why couldn’t I just have a simple, calm life like everyone else? Jake was supposed to be my soulmate. After four years of being together, it was fews days before our wedding. Then, out of nowhere, he called it off and everything fell apart. I stopped halfway down the road, soaked by the rain but that was the least of my worries. Tears mixed with the rain as I cried. I didn’t even understand what had happened. I kept telling Jake the truth, that I had nothing to do with what he thought I did, but he didn’t believe me. No one did. People walking by looked at me as if I was crazy, they already passed their judgment without caring to know what really happened, but the looks from strangers passing by didn’t matter to me. I was lost in my own world of pain. My phone rang but I hesitated before picking it up. It wasn’t Jake. It was my roommate. Of course, she must have heard by now. I sighed, feeling too tired to talk to anyone. I cleaned my tears and headed home, hoping that if I went to bed, it would turn out to be a bad dream. But deep down, I knew this was real. The next morning, the sun felt too bright for how I felt. I lay in bed, blinking at the light, hoping for good news. My phone buzzed causing my heart to race, but it was just an app reminder, not Jake. I felt disappointed and put the phone back on the bed. Then, Joyce, my roommate, walked in with a tray. She smiled a little and set it down. Beautiful Morning to you Emily, she said, serving me a mug of hot coffee. I thought you might like something warm after last night.” I took the mug and gave her a weak smile. “Thanks,” I said, sipping the drink, though it didn’t really help. Joyce sat on my bed, her expression was sympathetic. I know this is hard but things will get better. You just need some time. I nodded but didn’t really believe it. How could things get better when my whole life felt like it was falling apart? “Oh, I almost forgot,” Joyce said, reaching into her bag. She pulled out an envelope. “This came in the mail yesterday.” I opened it thinking it was something that could be helpful to the situation but it was an invitation to my school reunion. All the bad memories of being bullied and embarrassed came back. Why would I want to go there? “Come on, Emily,” Joyce said, noticing the look on my face. I think it will be good for you. You can get out, meet people, and take your mind off things for a bit.” Maybe Joyce was right, maybe I needed to get out but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go. Facing the past wasn’t something I looked forward to The reunion party was crowded, everywhere buzzing with music and different activities. It was a beautiful time for old friends to connect. But I felt uncomfortable, Joyce had convinced me to come, saying it will be a good distraction from everything that has happened with Jake. I sat in one corner, enjoying the views but my mind was else. Then I saw Mia. She is the last person i'd wanted to see. Mia made my life miserable in high school, and it didn’t seem like she had changed much. She spotted me almost immediately and made her way over, a stylish smile on her face. “Well, look who it is,” Mia said, her eyes gleaming. “Emily Carter. Haven’t seen you in ages. You look... different. Life hasn’t been too kind, has it?” I forced a small smile, trying to keep my cool. Of course, she would jump at the chance to make me feel worse. I didn’t want her to know she was getting to me, so I kept quiet, hoping she would lose interest and leave. The night dragged on, and soon, everyone started talking about their lives';jobs, families, achievements. I quietly listened to them without contributing to the discussion. Do I even have anything to brag about, I wasn't that lucky like the others. Everything was going fine until Emily decided to talk. “I’ve been traveling a lot, you know,” she said loudly, making sure everyone could hear. “Just got back from Europe. My business is doing great.” She glanced over at me, her voice dripping with fake concern. “But I did hear some unfortunate news. Emily, isn’t it true your wedding was called off? Such a shame.” All eyes turned to me. At this point my heart was racing and I was almost shaking. I could feel everyone watching, waiting for me to say something. Mia’s words stung, but I couldn’t let her humiliate me like this. Not in front of everyone. “No,” I said, trying to stay calm. “Actually, my wedding is still on. My fiance and I are fine, and I never cheated.” Mia raised her eyebrows, looking surprised. “Oh really? Who’s the lucky guy then?” gosh, what's her mission, to ruin me? I whispered quietly. I couldn’t stop now. “He’s wonderful,” I said, feeling the words slip out. “The most loving and handsome man you could ever meet. The CEO of the biggest company in town, a multi-billionaire. He’s every woman’s dream.” The room went quiet for a moment. Then, someone from the crowd spoke up. “Wait... are you talking about Alex Whitmore? The CEO of Whitmore Technologies?” I froze. Who? I had no idea who that was, but I couldn’t take it back now. “Yes,” I said, nodding slightly. “That’s him.” The room buzzed with excitement. “She’s marrying Alex Whitmore!” People started whispering, and suddenly, everyone wanted to talk to me. They smiled, congratulated me, and acted like I was someone important. Even Mia looked shocked, her confidence shaken. For the first time all night, I felt like I was in control. The party ended with everyone wanting to be on my side, but as I walked out, a new worry crept in. Who is Alex Whitmore?
