Chapter 1 The Divide

695 Words
The rain in London didn’t fall; it crashed against the glass of the high rise office building like a warning. Zayd adjusted his lanyard and ran a hand over his face, staring at the lines of code on his laptop. As a Senior Cyber Security Analyst, he was used to long hours. He had worked his way up from a humble neighborhood, relying on his faith and his own grit to build a stable, middle-class life for himself. As a British Nigerian Muslim, he took pride in his integrity and his work, but he knew exactly how the elite board members in this building viewed him as just another contracted employee. He certainly knew that was how her family saw him. "Mr. Zayd?" He looked up from his screen. Standing at the doorway of the server room was Layla. She wore a neatly styled pastel hijab that framed her pale skin and clear, intelligent eyes. Layla was the daughter of the firm’s wealthy founder, but she refused to just sit at home. She was brilliant in her own right, working alongside the tech team. But while she carried herself with humility, the aura of her family’s immense wealth and high societal standing always loomed in the background. Her family was deeply elitist, expecting her to marry a man of status and fortune from their own exclusive European community. To them, someone like Zayd a middle class Black man wasn't even in the conversation. Yet, when they worked together, none of that mattered. "Yes, Sister Layla," Zayd replied, lowering his gaze respectfully before gesturing to the monitors. His voice was calm, grounded, and instinctively protective. "The main servers are being compromised," Layla said, her voice urgent as she stepped into the room, holding a tablet. Her fingers trembled slightly. "Someone is bypassing our firewalls and downloading the core encrypted signatures. Zayd... the access token used belongs to my father's account. Someone inside my family’s inner circle is doing this, and they are routing the hack through your employee ID to frame you." Zayd’s jaw tightened. The reality of the threat set in. Her family already looked down on him; if he was framed for corporate espionage, his career would be destroyed, and his reputation ruined. They wouldn't hesitate to believe the worst about a middle-class outsider. "They want to pin it on me?" Zayd stood up, stepping around the desk. He kept a respectful distance, but his dark eyes flashed with an unyielding determination. "Then let them try. Layla, your family might have the wealth, and they might look at my skin color or my bank account and think I am nothing. But I stand by the truth. We pray toward the same Qibla. We answer to the same Creator. My integrity is bound by my faith, not a dollar sign." A sudden wave of emotion hit Layla. In a world where her family judged everyone by their net worth and background, Zayd’s pure faith and dignity were an absolute sanctuary. He didn't care about her family's money; he cared about what was right. "I know," she whispered, her voice soft in the hum of the server fans. "They think status is everything... but you have a wealth in your character that they could never buy." Before Zayd could answer, the server lights suddenly flickered and died. The entire room and the high rise around them plunged into absolute darkness. The heavy, metallic click of the electronic security doors automatically locking down echoed through the walls. The hackers had completely cut the grid. They were trapped inside. Zayd immediately stepped in front of Layla, using his tall, solid frame to shield her from the glass entry doors as the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed in the dark hallway outside. He reached out, his hand hovering just inches from her sleeve honoring her boundaries completely, never touching her, but creating an unbreakable wall of safety. "Stay behind me, Layla," Zayd commanded softly, his heart hammering against his ribs, his tawakkul grounding him in the pitch black. "They might have the power out there, but Allah is with us in here. No one gets to harm you."
