Chapter 5: She Dared Him Close

1761 Words
“Cal…” The name slipped from his lips in a fractured whisper. And the moment it did, something inside Calvin broke. Memories he had buried for six brutal years surged forward without mercy, crashing over him like a violent tide. Her laughter beneath summer rain. Her stubborn pouting whenever she lost an argument. The warmth of her tiny fingers wrapped around his sleeve as she followed him everywhere. The girl he had loved. The girl who had destroyed him. Now she sat before him once again, impossibly beautiful, dangerously close, staring at him with eyes capable of dragging a man straight into madness. “What else can I serve you?” Cleopatra asked softly. A faint smile curled on her lips. Too soft. Too intimate. Too different. Calvin’s gaze sharpened. This wasn’t the Cleopatra he remembered. Six years ago, she had been bright sunlight reckless, emotional, impossible to ignore. But the woman before him now? She was lethal. Controlled. Seductive. Every glance she gave him felt deliberate, as though she had mastered the art of temptation itself. His eyes remained locked on her while silence stretched between them. Then slowly— Cleopatra picked up a crimson grape. Her delicate fingers rolled it lightly before she lifted it toward his lips. “Try this,” she murmured. “It’s sweet. Healthy too.” Her fingertips brushed against his hand intentionally. A dangerous spark exploded beneath his skin. Instantly— Calvin seized her wrist. The grape trembled between them. His expression turned glacial. “What exactly are you doing?” he asked coldly. The room temperature seemed to plummet. His voice lowered further. “Are you serving me… or playing with me?” Cleopatra didn’t flinch. “I’m serving you.” Her calmness only irritated him more. His grip tightened slightly around her wrist. “Do you act like this with every customer?” The jealousy buried beneath his voice was impossible to miss. Cleopatra tilted her head slowly. “No.” Her answer came effortlessly. “I usually prepare the table and leave.” Her lips curved faintly. “I’m not an escort.” Then her eyes met his directly. “But for you…” Her voice softened into something dangerously intimate. “I want to do more.” Something dark flickered through Calvin’s eyes. He released her hand abruptly before leaning back against the sofa, crossing one leg over the other with cold restraint. “Serve me then,” he said calmly. His gaze swept over her slowly. “But don’t cross the line.” The words sounded indifferent. But Cleopatra saw it. The tension in his jaw. The storm buried behind his eyes. He was angry. Still angry. Whether because she chose Anthony… Or because he had never truly moved on from her… She didn’t know. But she refused to retreat now. Not when she had finally managed to shake him. “Okay,” she said sweetly. “Then let me refill your glass.” She poured the wine slowly, the crimson liquid swirling beautifully beneath the dim lights. Then intentionally— Her fingers brushed against his again as she handed him the glass. Their eyes met instantly. And neither looked away. It felt magnetic. Dangerous. Like two people standing at the edge of a cliff, knowing one more step would destroy them both. “How has work been?” Cleopatra asked quietly. “I know I’m late… but congratulations on becoming CEO of INK Model.” Her gaze remained fixed on him. Meanwhile, Calvin’s attention had drifted elsewhere completely. To her lips. Soft. Glossy. Perfectly shaped. Every word she spoke only made the ache inside him worse. Desire clawed violently at his chest while resentment burned alongside it. He swallowed hard. Then scoffed lightly. “Oh?” A mocking smile tugged at his lips. “So after four years, I’m finally getting congratulated?” Cleopatra immediately caught his hand with both of hers. The sudden warmth nearly shattered his composure. She looked up at him like someone carrying unbearable regret. “I’m sorry.” Her voice trembled. For the first time tonight, the seductive mask cracked. Pain spilled through her expression. “I know I hurt you back then,” she whispered. “I know I acted terribly… and I know there’s no excuse for what I did.” Her eyes lowered slowly. “But I really am sorry, Cal.” The sincerity in her voice hit harder than he expected. Because Calvin knew. He knew exactly how much she had ruined him. The sleepless nights. The rage. The humiliation of watching her walk away with another man. Anthony. The mere thought ignited fury inside him instantly. “I know I was awful to you…” Cleopatra continued softly. “And with Anthony, I—” “Don’t.” His voice struck like ice. Cleopatra froze. Calvin’s eyes darkened violently. “Don’t say his name in front of me.” Every word dripped with restrained fury. His hand suddenly tightened around hers. Hard enough to make her heartbeat stumble. “You miss him that much?” he asked bitterly. “You just had to bring him up while sitting here with me?” “No!” Cleopatra immediately shook her head. Her fingers instinctively patted his hand gently, trying to soothe the rage radiating from him. “That’s not what I meant…” Her voice weakened. “We never even…” BANG! The office door suddenly flew open. The explosive tension shattered instantly. Smith stepped inside hurriedly, his expression tense. “Chairman,” he said carefully, “Miss Guinevere is here. She insists on coming inside.” Cleopatra’s expression changed subtly. She already understood what was happening outside. “Let her in,” she said calmly. Smith immediately turned toward Calvin for confirmation. Calvin waved his hand dismissively. “It’s fine.” A second later— Guinevere entered. And the moment she saw them sitting close together— Her entire expression froze. Calvin and Cleopatra looked inseparable. Like gravity itself kept dragging them toward each other. Her chest tightened painfully. “Cleo…” Guinevere forced a smile. “I’ve been calling you. Why weren’t you answering?” She moved instantly, attempting to sit between them. But Cleopatra reacted faster. Smoothly. Elegantly. Her hand lightly caught Guinevere’s arm before redirecting her toward the chair opposite them. “Guinevere,” Cleopatra said pleasantly, “you shouldn’t inconvenience an important guest.” Her smile remained sweet. But the mockery beneath it was razor-sharp. “Please sit there.” Guinevere blinked in disbelief. “A VIP?” she repeated. “It’s Calvin. He’s literally my CEO.” Cleopatra ignored her completely. Instead, she picked up another grape. Slowly. Deliberately. Then she brought it toward Calvin’s lips again. “Open your mouth, Cal,” she purred softly. “Let me spoil you properly.” The tension in the room skyrocketed. Then finally— Cleopatra glanced toward Guinevere. “He may be your CEO,” she said smoothly, “but tonight?” Her eyes glimmered dangerously. “In my space… he’s mine.” Guinevere’s expression cracked. The provocation was unbearable. Calvin himself went completely still. Because Cleopatra wasn’t merely teasing anymore. She was openly provoking everyone in the room. Including him. “Escorts really are possessive of their clients,” Guinevere shot back coldly. Cleopatra smiled faintly. “Can a manager call herself a model?” Guinevere frowned. “Of course not.” “Good.” Cleopatra’s smile sharpened. “So your brain still functions.” “You—!” “There’s also a difference,” Cleopatra interrupted calmly, “between serving someone… and selling yourself.” The insult landed perfectly. Guinevere’s face darkened with rage. Without hesitation, she snatched a glass of wine and swallowed it in one furious gulp. At that exact moment— The door chimed again. Alvin entered alongside several staff members carrying silver containers. “I apologize for the delay, Mr. Ink,” Alvin said respectfully. “We ran out of citrus freshener and immediately replaced it.” His sharp gaze swept across the room instantly, sensing the dangerous atmosphere. “I hope tonight’s service satisfies you.” Calvin nodded lazily. “Very well.” Alvin bowed before exiting with his staff. The moment the door closed again— Cleopatra looked toward Guinevere with playful disdain. “You really shouldn’t drink so much,” she sighed dramatically. “Do you want wrinkles before thirty?” Guinevere nearly exploded. Cleopatra leaned closer with fake concern. “Bestie,” she whispered sweetly, “I’m still working. I’ll call you later.” Then gently— She guided Guinevere toward the door. The second they stepped outside, Guinevere grabbed her arm tightly. “What is going on?” she whispered harshly. “Are you two okay again?” Cleopatra looked completely unfazed. “I don’t remember us ever not being okay.” Then she smiled lazily. “I have work to do now.” And before Guinevere could say another word— The door closed in her face. Cleopatra turned around slowly. Then walked back toward Calvin. Her smile returned instantly. Bright. Dangerous. Enchanting. Calvin stared at her in visible confusion. “Aren’t you two supposed to be friends?” Cleopatra simply sat beside him again. “You shouldn’t concern yourself with her,” she whispered softly. Then her fingertips gently caressed his cheek. The touch nearly snapped the last thread of his restraint. After serving him several more drinks, Calvin finally stood. But before he could leave— Cleopatra suddenly held out her phone. For the first time that night… She looked nervous. “Can you…” she asked quietly, “…put your number in for me?” Silence. Calvin stared at her for a long moment. Then finally— “Sure.” He took the phone. Typed his number. Returned it. And left. No hesitation. No backward glance. Yet the moment he entered the car outside— His expression changed completely. The teasing disappeared. The desire disappeared. Only cold calculation remained. Smith entered the driver’s seat quietly while Calvin sat in silence, staring at the city lights flashing beyond the tinted windows. Then finally— He spoke. Every word precise. Controlled. Dangerous. “Hire the best investigator available.” Smith stiffened immediately. Calvin’s gaze darkened. “I want everything about Cleopatra, uncovered.” His jaw tightened slightly. “Everything. Leave no stone unturned.” And somewhere deep inside him— The boy who had once loved her was beginning to wake up again. Which terrified him more than anything else.
