Chapter Five : The man behind the Shadows

No one moved. The stranger stood in the center of the room as though he owned it. Rain lashed against the shattered windows while armed men surrounded the house, their weapons trained on Luca, Elena, and Matteo. Luca kept his pistol raised. "Give me one reason not to shoot you." The man smiled. "Because you won't." "You sound confident." "I am." "What makes you so sure?" "You've spent eight years looking for answers. If you kill me now, you'll spend the rest of your life wondering what really happened to Adrian." Silence. Luca's finger tightened around the trigger. Elena glanced at him. "He's buying time." "I know." The stranger chuckled. "No, Miss Reyes. I'm giving you something far more valuable." "And what's that?" "The truth." Matteo finally spoke. "You shouldn't have come."The stranger looked at him with amusement. "You taught me never to trust anyone else with important work." Luca frowned. "You know him?" Matteo nodded slowly. "I wish I didn't." "Who is he?" Matteo hesitated. The stranger answered instead. "My name is Victor Kane." Elena searched her memory. "I've never heard of you." "That was always the plan." Luca never lowered his weapon. "What do you want?" Victor's eyes drifted to the flash drive in Elena's hand. "That belongs to me." "It belongs to Matteo," Elena replied. Victor smiled. "Matteo only collected the information." "What information?" "Names." "What names?" "Judges." "Politicians." "Federal agents." "Business leaders." He paused. "And every person who ever accepted money to protect the De Santis organization." Elena stared at the flash drive. "So this exposes corruption." Victor laughed. "It destroys empires." Matteo spoke quietly. "I never intended anyone to find it." Victor looked at him. "Yet you kept it." "I needed protection." "No." Victor shook his head. "You kept it because guilt never leaves a man alone." Matteo lowered his eyes. For the first time, nobody argued. Luca broke the silence. "You still haven't told me why Adrian died." Victor's smile disappeared. "Because he became a liability." Luca's jaw tightened. "My brother had a name." "And names don't change facts." "He wasn't a liability." "He was preparing to disappear with Rachel Morgan." Elena frowned. "Rachel loved him." Victor nodded. "She did." "So why kill him?" Victor looked directly at her. "Because love makes intelligent people careless." Luca stepped forward. "You murdered him?" Victor shrugged. "I gave the order." The admission echoed through the room. Elena watched Luca carefully. His breathing slowed. His expression became frighteningly calm. The calm before violence. "Luca," she whispered. "I heard him." Victor folded his hands behind his back. "Your brother wanted to expose everyone." "He wanted a different life." "He wanted to destroy ours." "You mean yours." Victor smiled. "An important distinction." Luca took another step. "You stole eight years from me." "I gave you eight years." Luca frowned. "What?" "If I'd wanted you dead, you would've joined Adrian that same night." Elena interrupted. "Why keep Luca alive?" Victor looked at her. "Potential." "What does that mean?" "He became exactly the leader I needed." Luca stared at him. "You've been manipulating me." "Not personally." Victor shrugged. "I simply removed obstacles." "You killed my brother." "Yes." "You framed Rachel." "Yes." "You kept me chasing ghosts." "Yes." Each answer made the room colder. Elena finally understood. "This wasn't revenge." Victor looked pleased. "Very good." "It was business." "Exactly." Matteo let out a weary sigh. "I warned Adrian." Everyone turned toward him. "You what?" "I begged him to run." Luca looked stunned. "You never told me that." "I couldn't." "Why?" "Because I failed him." The old man's voice cracked. "I believed I could protect him." Victor laughed quietly. "You overestimated yourself." Matteo ignored him. "I met Adrian two nights before he died." Luca's face filled with confusion. "He asked me to come with him." Silence. "He wanted all of us to leave." Luca whispered, "Why didn't you?" Matteo closed his eyes. "Because I believed loyalty mattered more than family." His voice broke. "I've regretted that decision every day since." Even Victor stopped smiling. The confession felt painfully genuine. Suddenly, one of the armed men hurried into the room. "Sir." Victor looked annoyed. "What?" "We've got movement outside." "Police?" "No." Victor frowned. "Then who?" Before anyone could answer, tires screeched outside. Another convoy entered the property. More vehicles. Different men. Different weapons. Victor's expression changed. "This is unexpected." Luca glanced toward the window. "Friends of yours?" Victor didn't answer. Gunfire erupted outside. Not aimed at the house. At Victor's men. The attackers returned fire immediately. Within seconds, the yard became a battlefield. Explosions echoed through the night. Elena looked at Luca. "What's happening?" "I don't know." Matteo slowly stood. "I do." Everyone looked at him. "There was one name on that flash drive I never expected anyone to find." Victor's face darkened. "You stayed in contact with him?" "No." "But if he discovered the truth..." Another explosion shook the building. Windows shattered. Dust rained from the ceiling. Victor's calm finally cracked. "We're leaving." None of his men moved. Victor frowned. "I said move!" No one obeyed. Instead, every weapon in the room slowly turned toward Victor. His smile vanished. "What are you doing?" One of the gunmen stepped forward. "We've been paid more." Victor stared at him. "By who?" The front door opened. A tall man walked through the smoke. He wore a long black coat, and a fresh scar crossed his left cheek. His voice was calm. "By me." Victor's confidence disappeared completely. "You." The newcomer nodded. "It's been a long time." Luca looked from one man to the other. "You know him too?" Victor answered without taking his eyes off the newcomer. "I trained him." The newcomer smiled faintly. "And then you betrayed me." Elena whispered, "Who is he?" Matteo answered quietly. "Gabriel Ross." Luca frowned. "I've never heard that name." "You weren't supposed to." Gabriel looked at Luca. "I worked for Victor." "Until?" "Until I discovered Adrian's murder wasn't the first innocent life he had taken." Victor's voice hardened. "You should've stayed buried." Gabriel shrugged. "I tried." He looked toward Elena. "Miss Reyes." She blinked. "You know me?" "I've been reading your articles for years." "You've been watching me?" "I've been waiting for someone stubborn enough to uncover the truth." Elena looked at Luca. "So everyone knew about me except me." Luca almost smiled. "Welcome to my world." Despite the danger, she laughed. "So, what happens now?" Gabriel looked around the room. "Now?" He drew his pistol and aimed it directly at Victor. "Now we finish what should've ended eight years ago." Victor slowly smiled again. "You still think this is the end?" "No," Gabriel replied. "I think this is the beginning." Outside, sirens echoed through the city. Getting closer. Much closer. Luca looked toward the sound. "The police." Gabriel nodded. "I called them." Victor laughed. "You think the police can stop me?" Gabriel's smile matched his own. "No." He glanced at Elena, who still held the flash drive tightly. "I think she can." Every eye in the room turned toward Elena. For the first time in her career, the biggest story she had ever uncovered wasn't sitting in her notebook. It was in the palm of her hand. And everyone in the room was willing to kill for it.
