Deputy Mark jumped at the sound of the phone. He should be used to that sound by now, but with all that had been going on lately: the recent accident and changes within the department itself. He was on edge. Sheriff Dennison was always trying to find more help, and not only just help, but qualified help. Being a deputy wasn’t an easy job for anyone. Mark knew first hand from Guy, who was married and had a couple kids, that working as a deputy posed many problems. Time with family being the main one. Mark had been privy to many conversations—one-sided of course—with Guy’s wife.
