Flora sat in her usual spot in the living room, the TV on, sound low. I was never certain if she could hear it at that volume—I had to struggle—but if nothing else, the glow of the thing made her happy. In the months I had lived here, I had gotten into the habit of reading out loud to her. She preferred the sensational, the lurid, the exciting. I had a feeling that our story of battling a vampire to save Lee’s soul would be a big hit. “How exciting.” She smiled at me from her chair, completely unconcerned that Lee was in danger. “What do you think will happen?” “Well.” I pulled out the framed photograph I had brought into the room with me and knelt down by her chair. “I think you’re going to help us.” She looked at the photograph, bringing it only a few inches away from her cloudy eyes
