CHAPTER TEN: THE WHISPER NETWORK

--- *Chapter 10 – The Whisper Network* The café was dimly lit, buried beneath layers of steel and shadows in the Old Quarter—far from the neon-glow of the city’s surveillance eyes. Liana sat in the corner booth, hood drawn low, fingers wrapped around a chipped cup of bitter tea. Her heart beat like a war drum in her chest. She had taken the risk. She sent the message. And now she waited. The reply had come through a burner line with a single word: *Midnight*. At 12:03, a figure slid into the booth opposite her—no name, no greeting. Just the scent of dust and damp paper. They wore a faded coat and mirrored lenses that reflected Liana’s tense expression back at her. “You asked for ghosts,” the voice was androgynous, flat. “Here I am.” Liana swallowed. “You were part of the Whisper Network?” A pause. “Once.” “And you knew Kael Idran?” “I knew the man before the world named him a monster.” She hesitated. “Tell me the truth.” The figure leaned in. “The truth is dangerous. Kael was no tyrant. He was the only officer who questioned the mission in Varnholm—the order to level a civilian sector suspected of harboring rebels.” Liana’s jaw clenched. “My father approved that operation.” “Of course he did. It was a test of loyalty, not strategy.” The figure’s voice dropped. “Kael refused. He tried to protect the civilians. He was stripped of command, branded a traitor, and nearly executed. He vanished before they could make him disappear permanently.” “So why is he back?” “To finish what he started,” the whisperer said. “To dismantle the machine from within.” Liana reached into her coat, pulling out the data chip. “I found this.” The figure didn’t touch it. “If that file gets out, everything changes. Kael becomes more than a ghost. He becomes a rallying point.” “I need him to tell his own story.” The figure nodded once. “Then you need to go west. The ruins of Varnholm. He was seen there three weeks ago.” “Is it a trap?” “Probably.” Liana tucked the chip away. “Then I’ll walk into it with my eyes open.” The figure slid a scrap of paper across the table. “This will get you past the first checkpoint. Don’t trust anyone. Not even the ones who seem kind. Especially not them.” Liana stood, heart heavy and head high. “Why are you helping me?” The whisperer’s voice softened. “Because once, I asked the same questions. But I stayed quiet. You’re louder than I was.” As she stepped back into the night, Liana felt the weight of a hundred eyes in the darkness—but none of them belonged to her father. Only to the truth she was chasing. --- *Next: Chapter 11 – Ashes of Varnholm* Liana travels to the ruins where Kael’s legend began—and where truths are buried under ashes. Ready?
