*Chapter 6 – Varnholm’s Silence*
Kael stood in the candlelit archive, the silence between him and Liana thick with memory. Dust floated through the air like echoes of a forgotten war. His voice, when it came, was low and steady.
“Three years ago, the 3rd Iron Division was deployed to Varnholm. We were told it was a simple operation—remove rebel insurgents, stabilize the town. But when we arrived, the town was already burning.”
Liana listened, wide-eyed, the journal clenched in her hand.
“There were no rebels,” Kael continued. “Only civilians. Families. Children. The 'enemy' was fabricated. Orders came from above. We were to clear the town—by force.”
She flinched. “That’s not in any report.”
“It wouldn’t be,” he said bitterly. “I refused. I ordered my men to hold. Others followed blindly. When I confronted Command, I was arrested. The next day, an ambush was staged. They told the others I was killed in action.”
“By rebels?”
“There were no rebels,” he repeated. “It was their excuse. And Lucien… your beloved fiancé… he was there. He obeyed those orders without hesitation.”
Liana’s stomach twisted. Her world began to tilt. “My father…?”
Kael’s eyes hardened. “General Rousseau signed the operation. He knew. He covered it all up.”
Silence again.
Liana paced, trying to process. “Why come to me?”
“Because you’re the only one who might believe me. You’re not like them. You’re… kind.”
She stopped, facing him. “Kindness doesn’t make me brave.”
“No,” Kael said, stepping closer, “but truth does.”
She searched his face. He was tired—worn by exile and guilt—but not broken. Not cruel. Not a villain.
“I don’t know what I can do,” she whispered.
“Help me find the missing file,” he said. “The one they buried. It’s proof. If we get it… I can go public.”
Her heart raced. Betraying her family. Her fiancé. Her entire life.
But also: standing for what was right.
“I’ll help you,” she said finally. “But if you lie to me—”
“I won’t,” Kael said. “You have my word.”
As they turned to leave, Kael paused. “One more thing. If anyone asks… I was never here.”
