CHAPTER FOURTEEN

1444 Words
Later that night, Casey fell asleep. She had to wake him up so that he would sleep in his room. She also went into her room and lay on her bed. Just then, a message popped up on her phone. It was Josiah. “Want to chat?” He asked. “Sure”. She typed back to him. “How was your day?” “It was fine although it was quite boring”. “It’s the same here. My mother did her birthday today but I wasn’t able to attend. Now I am the boring sibling. This period of the year is what I would call the busiest.” “I just got a week free from shooting movies or commercials”. “We have almost the same things in common. Why don’t we talk a lot more often?” “What would stop us from doing that? It’s a good idea.” “You are so cool. You have a rich father and you are rich on our own. What else do you lack?” “By the way, you drive a Lexus GL460 around and that’s way too expensive for someone that just started work three weeks ago”. “It was a gift from my father for my convocation. That was when I got my PhD.” “Your dad’s so rich. Then why do you work for my dad?” “My dad does not believe having rich parents guarantee your success. At first, I thought he was been wicked and unnecessarily punishing me but now I know better”. “We are so similar”. “You are much more famous. People see you every time on TV”. She sent an emoji with mixed feelings. “Okay, I think its bye for now. I’ve got to get to work tomorrow.” “Work? You’ve got to be kidding me. Good night”. Josiah exhaled and dropped his phone. He heard a voice from behind. He didn’t expect that and the impromptu barging startled him. “Who was that you were talking to?” Cody queried. “That was no one in particular, never mind”. “Hey, you can’t tell me that. I’ve been here for two minutes and you were oblivious of it because you were carried away in your chit-chat.” “Go and sleep, you have school tomorrow”. “That’s it. I knew you are distracted. For the record, tomorrow is a Sunday.” “Whatever. Just go and sleep. We have church tomorrow.” “Now, I see all you think about is work and it’s stressing you out”. “Thanks for your concern”. “I know there is something connected to a woman. It’s not far-fetched, you know”. “Cody! You got me and I admit. She’s my boss’ daughter and I like her”. Cody let out a cough. “Does she even notice you?” “Yes, we are already friends and she also likes speaking with me”. “Go for it bro.”Cody said, punching the air. Josiah gave him a wry look. “What do you know about things like this?” “Oh, come on. There you go again asking about things I know because you are older.” Cody shrugged. “Did our great-great grandfather show up to torment you as usual?” “Not really”. He said and they both giggled. Meanwhile, Clara also told her brother about the whole episode. She thought he would be mad at her for keeping such secret. “I wonder if he knows he has to meet me before anything can be done”. He said to tease her. “Casey, you…” She took a pillow and chased him around the house. The Junior League had commenced again. Casey had to spend time in the stadium to teach his team about new football techniques he had learnt. Being a coach was a herculean task but he pulled it off. The vigorous training sessions paid off. Their first match was an away match but they had a 2 to nil victory over the team at home. Their first four matches were wins at 2-0, 4-0, 3-2 and 3-1 respectively. The four consecutive wins placed them on top of the table and they were able to secure twelve points. The whole school was proud of him and the team. Those matches were played within a space of two weeks but it was not so stressful because they got the expected results. They had a break from matches for a week and he was glad that he was able to bond with Cody again. It was Monday afternoon. Schooling activities were closed for the day. The duo decided not to do their usual review in their school work. Instead, they resorted to review the past two weeks. “How did the past two weeks went on your side?” “Good. We’ve been training for the next match in the round. By the way it’s on Friday and it’s going to take place at the city dome.” ‘Now, I’ll be able to come and watch. I really want you guys to get that All School Cup. Our school’s yet to clam one you know”. “Yes, it will bring smiles to everyone’s faces to get that”. Cody said. “What did you guys do in the Economics class? You know, I’ve been missing class a lot these days”. “Oh, c’mon you were only out of class thrice in two weeks. There’s no cause for alarm”. Cody assured him. “Three days in two weeks is actually a lot to worry about”. Casey said, exhaling deeply. “Just calm your nerves. You are doing better than those that attend classes regularly”. “Cody, you don’t understand. I’m different. I’m not everyone else.” Casey said with a morose look. “You worry a lot. Only old people worry”. “I can’t just live a reckless life because I am young. I have something else to worry about”. “I don’t know how you find it easy to affiliate yourself with worries. I’m all ears”. “Carl and Melissa are dating. That’s even enough to worry about” “If I had known these was where you were driving at, I wouldn’t have giving you listening ears. They are old enough and matured to bear consequences of their actions.” “But”… Cody cut in before he could complete his statement. “Casey, this is High School and every student is old enough to be responsible for their actions. Don’t worry about it”. Cody said, patting his shoulders. “I think Carl is pushing your own twin sister into jeopardy and yet you are not concerned”. “Just leave her. She’s going to clock sixteen in three months so I believe she knows right from wrong”. “I’m not thinking in that perspective. I think we should work out a plan to separate them.” Casey suggested. That didn’t go well with Cody at all. “So you want us to separate them for your own selfish motives. You only care about yourself, Casey. You want to date my sister so bad and you will do all it takes to do that”. Cody said, fuming with anger “It’s not like that”. Casey tried to explain but he wasn’t given space. “Shut up. You are so desperate and callous. I’m sure you’d even want evil to rain on Carl so that you would get her and take her all to yourself. You are betrayer and want to thank you for revealing your true color”. “Cody! Will you just stop already?” “I will not stop. I don’t know how you could even think of such a thing. You are the worst friend ever”. “Cody!!!” “I will not stop. You are the devil’s incarnate and even Carl is better than you”. “Cody! Stop. I will not take any more from you again. Befriending you was my greatest mistake I made all my life. You are a pain in the neck yourself and I will put it to you that your sister is more honorable than you”. Casey said and left in anger.
