- ALEX (ELISE) I had just managed to swallow the last spoonful of oatmeal when the penthouse door hissed open. It was barely nine-thirty. I froze, the silver spoon halfway to my mouth, as Liam strode into the kitchen. He’d ditched his usual suit jacket, wearing just a charcoal grey dress shirt with the top two buttons undone. He looked big, strong, and entirely too energetic for a man who had been up guarding my door until two in the morning. "What are you doing here?" I asked, lowering the spoon.
