As soon as she and Linda saw me, Rey leaped forward and threw her arms around me. Then, recalling she was a non-hugger, sprang back and tucked her hands into her pants pockets. “Where have you been—hey! What"s that?” She peered at my head. “You got beaned!” Linda took my hands and examined carmine-speckled bandages. “And hurt.” Hunger plus stress plus weariness equaled wobbly legs. Drawing a deep breath, I plopped onto the grass. Why not add some green to once-white denim? They joined me and I brought them up to speed. Linda slapped the ground. “We should have followed him, Rey.” My cousin concurred and stared at a rolling ocean several yards ahead. “We slipped up, but maybe we can set things right.” “How?” I asked, curious. “The man could be anywhere. Maybe even on a boat or plane.”
