CHAPTER 002: The man in my cousin's house
Cassie’s pov
Tears brimmed down my eyes as I stood with my bags outside the gate to see how to get a cab that night.
I have signed the divorce papers Alessandro wanted me to sign yet Alessandro himself was not happy about it.
I don't know where to go or how to start my life again. I had no family here in Paris except my older cousin, Rhain who lived uptown.
Seeing that Rhain was my last hope, I took my phone and called her. Rhain was busy with someone on the phone so I just had to wait for her to finish up.
Something kept occupying my mind as I stood by the roadside waiting for a cab and my cousin's call.
It was about the naked picture of the lady I saw on Alessandro’s phone and why Alessandro suddenly changed towards me.
If I am accurate, the naked lady looked exactly like me. We have the same long tick midnight black hair and the same slope-shaped eyes.
But what kept baffling me was the young man I saw with the naked lady. Although I didn't see what he looked like, I could tell he also looked like someone I know—A random guy my cousin and I met early this year.
Knowing that I will never cheat on anyone, I quickly efface those thoughts from my head. Even if the lady in the picture looks like me, I know it can never be me.
What I did not understand was why Alessandro suddenly changed towards me and sent me away empty. He is my first love and I did not mind his detachment from me.
Could I have done something wrong? I saw the bitterness in his eyes after he picked up his phone and left the living room.
Taking a deep breath, I shut my eyes in pain reminiscing when I first met Alessandro.
We met at the beginning of the year in the big law firm where I worked. Alessandro was the friend of my boss, Ray Harris.
At first, when Alessandro asked me to be his contract wife, I declined his proposal but after my boss dismissed me from work, and I had no place to go, I agreed to be Alessandro’s wife for 100 billion dollars. At least with that money, I could establish my law firm.
But, I lost everything and got divorced instead.
Hot tears fell from my eyes and I suddenly wiped them off before my phone rang out.
It was my Cousin, Rhain Brown.
“ Hey Cassie, how are you doing?” Rhain sounded quite excited on the phone as her voice struck my ears.
I whimpered before replying to my cousin.
“ I'm fine, Rhain. Are you home?” I asked, my voice quite shaky.
“ Yes, I'm home. You don't sound too alright, honey. Are you sure you’re okay?” Rhain was suspicious of me on the phone.
There was no point narrating my long ordeal with Alessandro to my cousin. Rhian doesn't mind driving to Clarksville to cause a ruckus.
“ I'm okay, girlfriend, but I'm stuck and need your help right now,” I managed to say.
“ Where are you now? Do you need me to come to your house?” Rhain replied.
She doesn't mind driving to my place tonight. I can tell that from her voice.
“ No baby, let me come to the house instead” I replied sweetly in my feigned voice.
“ Wow! Sure you’ll come? I don't trust you. I’ll be outside waiting for you, and don't you dare pull my legs, Cassie,” She said jokingly.
“ Trust me, I am on my way already. Goodbye, and I love you.” I faked a loud laugh and suddenly hung up.
After I hung up, sorrow filled my heart again and I turned back to take a good look at the place I once called home.
Tears fell from my eyes as I said goodbye to everything around but most importantly— My first love, Alessandro.
A cab drove in my direction and I quickly halted it. The driver helped me with the three boxes that contained my belongings inside the booth and we drove off.
Some two hours later, we got to my cousin's place and I slipped 100 dollars in the driver's hands before he drove off.
My cousin lives in a comfortable three-bedroom apartment. She is the only person I can comfortably live with.
Rhain doesn't know that I and Alessandro are divorced. I can't say that to her either. She’ll go and cause trouble for Alessandro. She's not as tolerant and patient as I was.
The gate of Rhain's house was open so I pushed the gate and gradually moved one box in before going to grab the others.
While I was dragging the third box inside, I heard my cousin's door c***k, and someone, a young tall man, walked from inside the house and walked past me in the gate without saying a word.
The aura of the young man was quite sinister or something like that. The scent of his perfume was quite familiar, too, so I quickly turned to have a proper glance at him.
From his back, he had the physique of Alessandro, my husband but I know he can't be Alessandro.
Since it was a bit dark, I did not see his face or what he looked like.
When I became more curious to see his face, he immediately entered his car and drove off.
Just then, the door opened again, and my cousin walked outside.
Rhain did not know I was in her house already. From where she stood, I could hear her laugh on the phone with someone— one of her numerous girlfriends, I guess.
Tired and weak, I decided not to just stand and continue thinking rubbish in my mind, so I dragged one of my bags, and the noise interrupted Rhain.
“Oh my gosh, Cassie! You startled me! How long have you been standing there? And all these boxes?—” Rhain ended her call sharply and walked from the stairs to meet me.
I saw the suspicious looks on her face but replied casually to mask my pain.
” Not too long. Why? Are you afraid of something?” I answered her but she immediately threw me a big warm hug instead, shutting me from asking further questions.
I wanted to ask her about the man that walked past me earlier, if he was the same man I once knew.
He looks familiar but can it truly be him? it's been a while now.
