Her heart beat has increased and it's pounding painfully against her ribs. This was wrong, complicated and far too real but for the first time in a while she didn't want to run from it, she wanted every part of it.
“You should stop looking at me like that”. She whispered weakly.
Ethan’s gaze was fixed on her softly .
“Like what”. He teased her.
“Like …..I am something gold, like I matter so much”.
The words were honest, vulnerable and it came out quieter than she intended.
And Ethan?.
Ethan didn't deny it.
“You are”. He simply said.
Adian felt her breath short, she couldn't breathe properly like her breathing caught…
The confession settled heavily between them, this wasn't game, not stating, not strategy it was just the plain truth and somehow that is far more worse, it terrified her more than anything else.
“Ethan”.... She whispered softly.
He touched her slightly, moving his fingers against her skin.
“Tell me to stop”. He said, moaning slightly.
Adian tried to open her mouth but she couldn't even when she eventually did, no words came out, not when every part of her was ready . She was already moving towards him without permission, not when she wanted this….wanted him.
The moment between them was unbearable, then Ethan stretched down slowly giving her time to stop him but she didn't and when his lips finally touched hers, everything changed.
The kiss wasn't rushed, it wasn't reckless, it was careful, tentative at first like neither of them fully understood what they were crossing into.
But the second, Adian kissed him back, something inside Ethan changed, his hand combed into her hairs gently as he pulled her closer, the gap between them breaking apart piece by piece.
Adian could feel her body temperature rising instantly, her fingers gripped the front of his shirt as the world around her disappeared completely.
There was no business, no meeting, no contracts, no revenge, no pretending just this , just him and their feelings. She had never been kissed like this before like she was wanted, protected, loved or needed.
Ethan continued, he deepened the kiss slowly, carefully mindful of her injuries even while his self control unravelled. Adian could feel it, she could feel the heat beneath his skin, the way he was trying and failing to remain composed, her heart racing wildly. This was Ethan Blackwood, the untouchable billionaire who terrified entire industries and somehow he was holding her like she was the only thing keeping him grounded. That thought alone nearly destroyed her, it terrified her. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing unevenly.
Adian stared at him in shock not because they kissed but because of how much she felt and judging by Ethan's expression, he felt it too dangerously so neither of them spoke immediately.
The silence wasn't awkward, it was overwhelming.
Ethan rested his forehead lightly against hers, his breathing still uneven.
“This complicates things, I think we have crossed the line”. Adian whispered quietly.
“Yes”. His answer came instantly.
She let out a nervous laugh.
“At least you're honest,”.
“I told you, I don't lie”. He said calmly while his eyes still fixed on her.
Adian's heart is still racing, she hasn't calmed down, her heart squeezed painfully and that was the problem, everything about this felt real, too real and it's happening fast.
Slowly she stepped back.
The loss of warmth between them disappeared instantly and they could feel the pain.
Ethan notices the hesitation in her eyes instantly.
“What is it?”. He asked
Adian looked away briefly before looking back at him again.
“I am scared”.
The honesty surprised both of them.
Ethan was surprised more, his expression softened slightly.
“Of me”? He asked a little bit confused.
“No, if this”. She admitted quietly.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“Adian.”
“I already gave everything to someone once, and look what happened”. She whispered.
Ethan could feel her pain and it hit him harder than expected.
“She hurt you deeply”. He said carefully.
“They both did”.
There was silence, then Ethan stepped closer again.
“But I am not David”.
Adian glanced at him and then that was exactly what terrified her because David had pretended to love her.
Ethan….. Ethan was trying not to and somehow that felt more dangerous.
When they finally went back inside the mansion to their various rooms, neither of them could sleep that night.
Adian lay awake in her bed, staring at the ceiling while replaying every second of the kids over and over again. She could still feel his lips pressed against hers…..her lips still tingled.
Her chest tightened, squeezed every time she remembered the way Ethan looked at her afterwards like he was already in too deep. She pressed her hand against her face and whispered softly.
“This wasn't supposed to happen, there are rules, the contract has boundaries, strict rules to restraint them and distance but some where along the way they had stopped pretend Adian wasn't sure how to survive that.
Across the hall, Ethan sat alone in his study, a glass of untouched whiskey rested beside him while the city light filtered faintly through the windows.
He wasn't thinking about work or the company or David only Adian ... .only her mattered only her in his mind.
The softness in her voice when she admitted she was scared, the way she melted against him like she wanted to trust him but didn't know how.
Ethan closed his eyes briefly this was bad, very bad because he was losing control and for a man like him that was dangerous.
The next morning, the atmosphere between them changed completely, every glance lingered too long, every touch felt intentional, every silence carried tension.
Adian walked into the kitchen wearing a soft cream sweater and loose pants. Her hair is slightly messy from sleep.
Ethan looked up from his coffee and froze for half a second.
She noticed immediately.
“Good morning”. She said quietly. She was blunching faintly.
“Morning”. Ethan replied, his gaze lingered on her longer than necessary.
The single word sounded louder than usual.
Adian tried to ignore but her stomach flipped, tried and failed. She moved toward the counter carefully.
“His is your head”?.
“Better”.
“And your ribs”?.
“Sore”.
“You should still rest”.
“You're hovering again”. She said smiling.
“I am watching. Monitoring”.
“That sounds worse". He smiled softly.
