Silent Moment

“Why”?. Ethan's gaze was fixed on her. “Because you deserved it”. He was sincere in his answer, he is obviously saying the truth and the truth in his statement caught her off guard. “No one’s ever…. She started, then stopped”. Ethan leaned forward. “Ever what”?. She shook her head slightly. “Nothing”. “Finish your sentences”. Then slowly, Adian continued. “No one's ever stood up for me like that”. Her words were vulnerable and honest and it felt strange leaving her lips. Ethan didn't react. “That's unfortunate,”. He said. Adian laughed softly. “You have no idea”. “Then tell me”. She looked up at him surprised. “You want to know”. “Yes”. “Why”. Ethan didn't hesitate. “Because I don't like not understanding things that are relevant to me”. Adian smiled faintly. “Still making it sound like strategy”. “It is”. She studied him for a moment. “Then…… my parents, they care more about reputation than anything else growing up, everything was about appearance, being perfect, saying the right things, acting the right way. So when something went wrong, it wasn't about how I felt. It was about how it looked”. Ethan listened silently without interrupting her. “And David….. he was the same, just better at pretending he wasn't”. Her voice softened. Ethan's expression hardened. Adian noticed. “You don't have to be angry for me”. She said gently. “I am not”. “You're…..your expression showed it”. There was a brief silence. Then he affirmed. “Yes” The honesty in his voice made her heart skip. “Why”?. She asked again . This time she really wanted to know why the question felt different, more personal. Ethan looked at her, he really stared at her and for the first time there was something in his eyes that wasn't controlled. “Because you shouldn't have been treated like that”. Adian froze. She wasn't expecting that honesty and his statement softened her and something dangerously shifted inside her. Ethan moved closer now. More closer. And neither of them had noticed when the distance disappeared. The air between them was heavy, charged like something was about to happen, something that shouldn't, something unexpected. “ You're not part of the contract”. Adian said softly. Ethan's eyes were fixed briefly to her lips then back to her eyes. “I know”. “Then why does it feel like you are”?. She whispered. He didn't respond and he didn't move away either. Adian’s heart is pounding loudly and unsteady by now. “This is a mistake”. She said though her voice lacks strength. “Probably”. He agreed but neither of them pulled back. “Ethan….” She said softly. His name sounded different on her lips softer and closer . Then, that was the exact moment everything almost changed, he touched her slightly, his fingers brushing lightly against her arm, warm, careful and intentional. Adian's breath caught. Her eyes shut for just a second and in that second she leaned in just slightly just enough but then reality hit hard. She opened her eyes suddenly and she stepped back. “No”. She said softly. Ethan's hands dropped immediately. The moment was broken. There was silence between them again but this time it was louder, heavier and more complicated. “We can't do this”. Adian said quickly. Her voice was unsteady. “You're right”. Ethan didn't argue. The agreement hurt more than she expected. “This is supposed to be simple, no feelings,no complications.” “Of course”. Ethan nodded. But something in his eyes, something unspoken knew it wasn't that simple anymore. Adian quickly and quietly left for her room, as she lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind refusing to calm down. Her brain was replaying everything. The way he is kind, the way he feels her pains, the way he knows her more than anyone else, the way he understands her, the way he looks at her, the way he touches her and makes her feel very important, and that was the problem because she was starting to believe it. Downstairs, Ethan stood by his window, his expression unreadable but his thoughts were anything but calm, he had built his life on control and distance, on never letting anything or anyone get close enough no matter what. But Adian, she wasn't supposed to matter and yet she did and somewhere between revenge and protection, between strategy and emotion. They had both crossed a line one they couldn't ignore and the one they might not be able to come back from.
