Chapter Three To build new disorder out of the old chaotic disorder – perhaps that is to live… -Belgi What gave rise to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan? When and how? Mountains of scholarly sociological material have already been written on this subject, but I am a writer and I am interested in the fate of human beings. For me nothing happens outside of human lives, relationships and bonds. And therefore, while this book is full of documents of the time, the selection of those documents is dictated by my writer’s intuition and, as I fumble at the knots of those human relationships, I am also trying to find the answer to that same question. And above all I am interested in the events that were suppressed, those that never became newspaper headlines, but had a significantly greater influence on those ten or fifteen years than the clamorous headlines that explained nothing. One such event took place in Namangan in December 1991, and so….
