In order to give a sense of the problems associated with Islam at that time in Uzbekistan, I have decided to transcribe one of those broadcasts by the BBC Uzbek Service. The broadcast began with those words that were spoken by President Karimov in Paris in May 1996, and then the presenter continued as follows:
