CHAPTER 4: Echoes and Hidden Rivalries

676 Words
The hallway smelled of polished wood and old sheet music, a scent that hummed with anticipation. Even the sunlight streaming through the tall windows felt heavier today, as if it carried the weight of unspoken rules. I stayed close to Julie, letting her energy anchor me. “Another day of Crestwood chaos,” she whispered, eyes twinkling. “Ready?” I forced a laugh. “I’ll survive. Maybe.” Julie nudged me. “Survive today, thrive tomorrow. That’s the motto.” We pushed open the choir room doors together. Sunlight spilled across the polished floor, catching dust motes in golden streaks. Students were already warming up, adjusting harmonies, voices blending in tentative melodies. Naomi Palmer stood at the front, baton in hand, radiating sharp authority. “Let’s begin,” Naomi said, her voice cutting through the room. “Everyone warm up and focus. And… Rose,” she added suddenly, eyes locking on me. “Since you’re new, come forward and sing alone. Let’s hear what you’ve got.” My stomach dropped. All eyes turned toward me. My hands shook slightly, and Julie’s grip on mine tightened. “I’ve got you,” she whispered, giving my arm a reassuring squeeze. I stepped forward, clutching my sheet music like a shield. The room seemed to shrink around me, the polished floor glaring under the sunlight, every note I had ever practiced suddenly not enough. Then I noticed him—Jayden Mark. Leaning casually in the doorway, guitar slung over his shoulder, smirk tugging at his lips, he didn’t say a word, but his presence made the air itself feel electric. Students straightened instinctively; whispers died. Daniel sat at the piano, calm and steady as ever. When our eyes met, a small wave of reassurance washed over me. I drew a shaky breath, letting him anchor me. Naomi’s baton flicked sharply. “Now, Rose. Sing.” I opened my mouth. The first note trembled like a leaf in the wind. Then, slowly, it settled. My voice wavered, but the melody found its strength, threading through the room. Daniel’s hands adjusted automatically at the piano, weaving a gentle support around my shaky voice. Julie hummed softly beside me, a grounding counterpoint that kept my nerves from completely unraveling. Jayden’s gaze never left me. His smirk widened slightly, and I felt my pulse race. Every fiber of me screamed to falter, to step back—but somehow, I held the note. By the time the last note hung in the air, silence settled. Naomi’s sharp eyes studied me for a long, terrifying moment. Then she nodded once, almost imperceptibly. “Not bad,” she said curtly. “But don’t think this gives you comfort. Crestwood doesn’t forgive mistakes. Keep up.” I exhaled shakily, stepping back to Julie’s side, my hands still trembling. Julie whispered, “See? You survived. You’re stronger than you think.” But my attention couldn’t leave the doorway. Jayden lingered a moment longer than necessary, smirk sharp and deliberate. Then, one slow step forward. My chest froze. The room blurred around him. Every instinct screamed at me to step back, but I couldn’t. He took another step, eyes locking on mine, magnetic and dangerous. Even Daniel’s calm gaze couldn’t steady the suffocating tension curling in my chest. And then he smirked that impossible, infuriating smirk—the one that promised storms, secrets, and challenges I wasn’t ready for. He turned on his heel, disappearing down the hallway, leaving the echo of his footsteps—and the threat of what was coming—hanging in the air. I clutched my sheet music, heart hammering. Julie’s eyes met mine, worry flashing. Daniel’s calm gaze tried to reassure me, but the flutter of fear and anticipation curling in my stomach couldn’t be eased. Something was coming. I could feel it in my bones. Crestwood wasn’t just about music, talent, or surviving. It was about storms, battles, and choices. And somehow… Jayden Mark was at the center of them all. And for the first time, I wasn’t sure I was ready.
