Chapter 16 Nahtaia, Oren, and Kale did not find a shelter by the time the rains arrived. At the very least, the storm did not come in an instantaneous downpour as it had in the past. Water trickled down through the leaves and branches as the trio wandered the forest floor. Oren would occasionally fly up into the canopy in search of an empty den—as there were usually many—but came back with a frown-tugged face every time. Kale kept his eyes on the road before them, skimming the expanse of trees and shrubs for enemy critters or birds. Nahtaia, on the other hand, was lost in utter confusion with herself. A sense of defeat overwhelmed her now that she knew she could not cross into the elven territory. She had dragged Oren and Kale for days on end, convinced she was going to fix things. She
