Elena’s POV:
I barely heard Rachael's voice as it came in gasps.
“Bad news?” I repeated my voice barely above a whisper. My eyes searched hers like they could dig the truth out of her. She was out of breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Had she run all the way here?
“Rachael, what’s wrong?” I sat up properly, bracing myself for whatever she was about to say.
She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she sat on the bed beside me and took my hand, her grip tight, warm, and trembling slightly. That alone made my stomach drop. Rachael wasn’t the type to hesitate. If she wasn’t speaking, then it was bad. Really bad.
