3 days to the Wedding
Sitting, I laugh. The slight feeling of being tipsy makes me happy. Tianah and Mariah decided to throw me a bachelorette party with just us three ladies. We invited Audrey, but she bailed at the last minute. I was a bit sad considering that she’s like a sister to me. The club is pounding with music, and we are sitting in a booth after having our fun.
I am covered in glitter and wearing a crown and a sash that says ‘The latest bride.’
"Oh, you need not worry darling, Jonathan is just a dumb man. All men are!" Mariah says as she laughs and pours a shot down her throat. We were in a discussion about dumb things men say.
"Maybe, but he's my dumb man!" I laugh and stand, and she pouts at me, sulking. "I'm going. I want to stop by Jonathan's place before night to make sure he’s okay."
“I get you babe. Go take care of your fiancé and leave us singles to sulk on our thumbs.” She said laughing
“Thank you for this wonderful night.”
“You’re welcome babes.” They both hugged me and put me in an uber as my car is still at Jonathan’s.
"Welcome Miss Hefel!" I groan and stop at Jonathan’s door. I had tried telling the door man to stop calling me Miss Hefel and call me Rainbow instead, but he refused. Usually, I would say it again, but tonight, I’m so tired. "Hello Mr. Francis. Hope Jonathan’s is in.
“Yes ma. He’s with Miss Audrey as well.”
Audrey? She told me she had a business appointment, that's the reason why she bailed on us. Maybe the appointment finished early. I thanked the doorman as I went up to Jonathan’s place. He wasn’t expecting me but come on, I would be a bad fiance if I didn't considering he told me he had the flu.
As the lock clicks, I push the door open cautiously, familiar with the creak it has the habit of making. The adjoining hall room of the Scandinavian duplex apartment is dimmed in darkness as the lights aren't hit on yet and the sun has just gone down.
I step inside the cozy home that has become like a second home to me since I started dating Jonathan. It always smells of something woody like the man that lives in it. I ease the door shut and listen for any movement, my eyes scan the manly decor, devoid of any feminine touch. I smile to myself, excited at the thought of redecorating this space as well as surprising Jonathan and Audrey.
I carefully poured the meal I had bought on my way into a plate and stalked toward the staircase that leads to the upper floor where Jonathan’s room is passing the walls where photographs were fixed in an ascending manner. The last one at the top of the wooden stairs was taken a while ago. It is a photograph of him on one knee as he placed the black diamond ring on my finger, his smile bright and his blue eyes shining with pride.
When I reached the upper floor, I happily sprinted toward Jonathan’s door when a sound from inside made me halt before I could throw the door open. Moans meet my ears, followed by the familiar grunting of someone I am used to hearing.
Probably he is watching p**n. He has done that a few times even though I had complained of not liking it. But as I reached my hands out to open the door again. I heard a rocking sound, and a female moan growing louder as I stayed outside, making my feet glued to the floor.
I push the door open and freeze, the tray of food falling from my hands. "Jonathan!" I stood shocked and sickened. On his bed was Audrey, naked and currently wrapped around him. Jonathan chuckles as he takes her lips in his, his tongue tasting every bit of her mouth.
“What the f**k Audrey!” I could feel my eyes getting teary as I looked at her. Instead of showing any form of remorse, she shrugged her shoulders like it was normal and they had been at it for long.
“Oh come on, Rainbow. Did you think I would let you walk in here and play wife with someone that I have been in love with since?”
I was confused. Play wife? It felt like I was the intruder here with her statement. This is the same person that I shared secrets with and she helps me clear off any problems I had with Jonathan. Or was she sleeping with him to clear my problems? That thought sickened me but my eyes were on her.
Audrey leaves to the closet and I turned to face Jonathan who had managed to grab and put on a trouser.
“How could you Jonathan? We were to be married in the next three days. Heck, we have even sent out invitations.”
“It just happened Rainbow. You know men are naturally polygamous. I tried so hard not to fall but I guess I couldn’t anymore.”
“Okay. I understand you. But I’m willing to continue with the wedding.” I didn't care about the future. I did not care that he didn't show any remorse or ask for forgiveness. I didn’t care how we would be once we were married.
All I thought of was how many people we had invited. I know we would sort out our issues later, we always did but I just can’t. His dad literally said I changed him. My gosh, his dad. Is this the stupid behaviour he claimed he had.
Jonathan laughed, bringing me out of my thoughts. “Wait, wait. You just saw me cheating with my best friend, someone you shared your problems with, your roommate s***h sister as you guys call yourselves and you’re still willing to continue the wedding.” I c****d my eyebrows in an unreadable expression.
“You’re really sweet, you know, but No Rainbow.”
“What do you mean by No? Jonathan, we’ve sent out invitations. The Chief of Navy Staff is going to be there. Not to mention other high dignitaries. The wedding has to go on.”
“I can’t because you’re boring!” Boring? “You’re so d*mn stiff with almost everything, including s*x.” His words screamed into my face as he laughs. “I can’t imagine spending my life with you even if it's only on paper. You were just a means to get my inheritance, and you helped me. It's being processed as we speak.”
My body freezes as Audrey speaks. “Yeah, thank you for clearing the way, Rainbow. Your help was much appreciated.”
I looked at Audrey, who had just entered the room wearing one of Jonathan’s shirts. It was so short, you could see half her bum flashing. She sashayed out of the room like I wasn't there. My eyes burned with anger and betrayal, but I turned back to Jonathan. “Did you ever love me or at least like me? Was our entire relationship a scam? Did you just befriend me just to get your inheritance?”
“Yes I did! You’re sweet. How can anyone not like you? Then three months later, I got bored. Audrey and I were always together, but not just exclusively. But my dad thought you were the real deal. He seemed so sure that you in my life made me so responsible, so I played for a bit until he signed over my inheritance. You know you can't complain babe. Asides dating and f*ck*ng a billionaire son and soon-to-be billionaire himself, you have got to enjoy privileges that every woman wished to have.” My hands swing and I slap him.
“Screw you.” The words left my mouth before I could stop it. My hands hurt from the slap, but my eyes were already tearing up.
“Uh, with you. No, thank you. Playing board games has more action than you. I’ll give you advice, darling, take it or leave it but stop being boring,” he says as he opens the door for me.
I could feel my heart shattering into a million pieces as the words left his mouth. Coupled with the sight I saw of him cheating with Audrey, his words went straight to my heart, and it was almost too much to bear. But I refuse to let him see me cry. I storm out of his house pretending not to hear Audrey’s fake goodbye as I head out.
Stepping into the cool night air a minute later, I felt a wave of emotions washes over me. I couldn't believe that Jonathan would do this to me. I couldn't believe that I had wasted a year of my life on someone who didn't even care about me.
I walked quickly and entered my car which I had parked at Jonathan’s place before my outing. I turned on the engine but I couldn't drive. Still feeling the wave of nausea wash over me, I went out of the car as I swallowed hard to keep from vomiting.
Quickly, I rushed to the roadside and entered a cab before my tears dropped. I couldn't help but think about how blind I had been. I had trusted Jonathan completely, and he had repaid that trust by cheating on me. I felt like such a fool, and I couldn't help but wonder what else he had lied to me about.
Immediately I got to my apartment, I heard ‘board games’ and it triggered me. I fell to the floor, my body shaking with sobs. Anger, sadness, betrayal. I was still in shock at what I had just witnessed earlier.
My best friends and roommates, Mariah and Tianah, rushed to my side, concern etched on their faces.
"Rainbow, what happened?" Mariah asked, gently stroking my hair.
I tried to speak, but my words were caught in a sob. Tianah handed me a box of tissues, and I blew my nose, trying to compose myself.
"He...he cheated on me," I stammered, my voice trembling. "I caught him with Audrey."
Mariah's eyes widened in outrage. "That bastard!" she exclaimed. Tianah let out almost immediately “That backstabbing b***h!” I couldn't even give a response to any of their comments as I let the tears flow.
"Oh my darling," Mariah said as she continued stroking my hair. Tianah wrapped her arms around me, holding me close. "We're here for you, Rainbow. We'll help you get through this together."
