Scientists had agreed on experimentation prior to the grand experiment on the Acropolis, and the first site amenable to experimentation and easily accessible to them was the theatre of Dionysus in Athens. The ancient theatre of Athens was convenient and very near the central site that they were interested in. That choice would save the committee unnecessary travel, and the site was very near the Acropolis, which would mean that the results would be particularly useful.
