Chapter 5: Realization

1244 Words
After the warning letter, St. Liora Academy stopped feeling like a school. It felt like a place with rules no one explained… but everyone obeyed. Ariana didn’t stop walking through its halls, but she noticed something different now. The silence wasn’t normal silence. It was intentional. People weren’t just avoiding her anymore. They were being told to. And she could feel it. 🌫️ The Distance Between Them Kael stopped appearing in visible places. At least, that’s what people thought. But Ariana knew better now. He was still there. Just not where people could see him easily. And that was worse. Because now, every time she entered a room, she felt his presence first before she saw anything else. Like a shadow hiding just beyond sight. It frustrated her more than she wanted to admit. One afternoon, she sat alone under the academy’s old stone bridge. The water beneath it moved slowly, reflecting fractured light. Ariana rested her head on her knees. “Why does it feel like I’m the one who did something wrong?” she whispered. The wind answered softly. But not the wind she expected. A darker one. A shift. A presence. She looked up. And there he was. Kael. Standing at the edge of the bridge above her. Not fully stepping down. Just watching. Ariana exhaled sharply. “You’ve been avoiding me.” Kael didn’t deny it. “I’ve been controlling distance,” he said instead. She frowned. “That’s the same thing.” “No,” he replied quietly. “It’s protection.” Ariana stood up slowly. “From what? Me?” Kael’s eyes darkened slightly. “From them.” A pause. “The academy,” she said. Kael didn’t answer immediately. That silence was answer enough. ⚡ The Truth He Avoided Ariana climbed the steps to meet him properly. Now they were face to face. Closer than they had been in days. “You said I should stay away from you,” she said. Kael nodded once. “Yes.” “But you’re still watching me.” Silence. Kael looked away briefly. “…I can’t stop it.” Ariana blinked. “That’s not an answer either.” He finally looked at her again. And this time, something in his expression was different. Less controlled. More… tired. “You don’t understand what happens when someone becomes close to me,” he said. Ariana crossed her arms. “Then explain it properly this time.” A long pause. Then Kael spoke. “My shadow is not normal.” Ariana stayed quiet. “It reacts to emotion,” he continued. “But not like other magic. It doesn’t just reflect it… it absorbs it.” Ariana frowned slightly. “Absorbs it?” Kael nodded. “Fear. Anger. Attachment. It all becomes part of it.” A breeze passed between them. “And when someone stays too close…” he added slowly, “it starts affecting them too.” Ariana’s expression softened slightly. “Affecting how?” Kael hesitated. That hesitation again. Then: “They start feeling what I feel.” Silence. Ariana blinked. “That doesn’t sound so bad.” Kael looked at her sharply. “It is when what I feel isn’t stable.” That made her go quiet. For the first time, she understood something deeper. He wasn’t just avoiding her for reputation. He was afraid of what his presence could do to her. 🌑 The Breaking Truth Ariana stepped closer again, despite everything. “You think I’m going to break because of you?” Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You will if you stay too long.” Ariana shook her head. “That’s not your decision.” Silence. Kael looked away again, jaw tightening. “You’re stubborn,” he said quietly. “I’ve been told that,” she replied. A faint pause. Then, almost reluctantly: “…It’s dangerous.” Ariana tilted her head. “For who?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. Then: “For you.” That word hung in the air. Soft. Heavy. Real. Ariana studied him carefully. Then said something that surprised even herself. “I think you’re more scared of me leaving than I am of staying.” Kael froze. Completely. Even the air around him seemed to pause. Ariana stepped closer until there was barely space between them. “You keep telling me to stay away,” she said softly. “But you’re always here.” Silence. Long. Fragile. Then Kael said quietly: “…Because you don’t react like others.” Ariana frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” Kael’s gaze lowered. “When I use my power… people feel it immediately. They fear it. They reject it.” A pause. “But you…” He stopped. Ariana waited. Then gently: “But me what?” Kael looked at her again. And for the first time— His expression wasn’t cold. It was uncertain. “…You stay.” 🌌 Something Changes The wind around them shifted. Not violently. But gently. Like the world itself was listening. Ariana felt it again. That strange pull between them. Not fear. Not logic. Something deeper. She whispered, “Is that why you kept looking at me?” Kael didn’t answer. But he didn’t deny it either. A long silence stretched between them. Then Ariana said softly: “I’m not scared of you, Kael.” That made him close his eyes briefly. As if that sentence carried more weight than it should. “You should be,” he said. Ariana shook her head. “I choose not to be.” Kael looked at her again. Longer this time. Like he was memorizing something he knew wouldn’t last. ⚔️ The Near Confession Ariana felt her heart beating faster—but not in fear. In something else. Something she didn’t want to name yet. “So what now?” she asked quietly. Kael hesitated. That hesitation lasted longer than usual. Then he said: “You should stay away from me.” Ariana sighed. “You already said that.” “I mean it this time.” Silence. But neither of them moved. Ariana took a small step closer. “Then why aren’t you making me leave?” That question hit differently. Kael’s expression tightened. Because he couldn’t answer it. Not honestly. The shadows beneath them stirred slightly. Restless. Ariana noticed. But she didn’t step back. Instead, she said: “You’re not as dangerous to me as you think.” Kael’s voice dropped lower. “You don’t know what I’ve done.” Ariana didn’t flinch. “Then tell me.” Silence. A long one. And for the first time— Kael looked like he might actually say it. But he didn’t. Instead, he turned away slightly. “…Not yet.” Ariana stared at him. Then quietly said: “One day you’re going to stop running from me.” Kael didn’t respond. But his shadow shifted. And for the first time… It moved closer to her instead of away. 🌙 Ending Scene That night, Ariana couldn’t sleep. Not because of fear. But because of understanding. Something was forming between them. Something unstable. Unspoken. Real. She stood by her window again. And saw him below. Kael stood alone under the moonlight. The shadows around him moved slowly now. Calmer than before. But not controlled. Ariana whispered, “What are we becoming…?” Below, Kael looked up. Even from a distance— Their eyes met. And for the first time… He didn’t look away immediately.
