The night air felt heavy as Ryker stood at the edge of the clearing, his back turned to the rest of the pack. His chest rose and fell with labored breaths, his hands clenched tightly into fists. The rejection still echoed in his mind, louder than the joyous howls and laughter of the pack behind him.
No.
He’d said the word as if it were easy. As if it hadn’t nearly torn him apart to force it out. Elena’s wide, broken eyes haunted him, the pain he’d seen there carving a deep wound inside his chest. He could still feel the bond between them, fragile but ever-present, the connection tugging at him like a leash he desperately wanted to break free from—but couldn’t.
Behind him, Selene’s voice broke through the turmoil in his mind. “Ryker, are you okay?”
Selene. His chosen mate. The one he’d been groomed to marry, to make his Luna. Her touch on his arm was light, but it felt like a weight. He turned to face her, his jaw tight as he tried to force the turmoil in his heart down where it wouldn’t betray him. She was watching him closely, her perfect lips curved in a knowing smile.
“You did the right thing,” Selene whispered, her hand sliding up his arm in a way that used to make his blood stir. But not anymore. Not since the bond had clicked into place with Elena. Everything had changed in that moment.
The Moon Goddess had chosen her for him. Not Selene.
Ryker gritted his teeth, his eyes narrowing as he looked past Selene, searching the crowd for a glimpse of Elena. He didn’t see her anywhere. The scent of her pain, of her heartbreak, lingered faintly in the air, but she was gone.
He had done this. He had hurt her. And for what? For tradition? For the weight of expectation that had been placed on his shoulders since the day he was born? Ryker was the future Alpha, and with that came the burden of every decision he made being scrutinized. He had always known that his mate would be an essential part of his leadership. And the entire pack had been watching him tonight.
Selene tilted her head, sensing his distraction. “You shouldn’t worry about her. She’s just… well, it’s unfortunate, but not unexpected. You were meant for more than her.”
Her words made Ryker’s stomach twist with guilt and something far more complicated—something he didn’t want to examine too closely.
Elena wasn’t just “unfortunate.” She was his mate.
And that bond—the one that was supposed to bring two wolves together as one—it wasn’t something he could just ignore. His wolf was howling in frustration inside him, restless and angry, wanting to go after Elena, to pull her close and protect her. To comfort her. But Ryker couldn’t do that. He couldn’t afford to look weak. Not now, not when the entire pack was watching his every move. He had responsibilities, expectations, duties as an Alpha that went beyond what he personally wanted.
Ryker closed his eyes briefly, fighting the urge to run into the forest after her.
Instead, he turned to Selene, forcing a calm expression onto his face. “It’s done. The Moon Goddess made a mistake. I chose you, Selene. You’ll be my Luna.”
Her eyes brightened at that, her lips parting in satisfaction. “And we’ll be great together, Ryker. Just you wait.”
But as Selene moved closer to him, her arms slipping around his waist, Ryker couldn’t shake the feeling that he was making a colossal mistake.
