Chapter 3: Shattered Heart

1223 Words
Elena felt the world around her crumble. The soft murmur of the pack fell away, leaving nothing but the deafening echo of Ryker’s words ringing in her ears. He had rejected her. Publicly. In front of everyone. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t speak. All she could do was stand there, rooted to the spot, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces as she tried to process what had just happened. The mate bond, the powerful connection that had pulled her to Ryker the moment she had laid eyes on him at the ceremony, was now the very thing tearing her apart. Her wolf howled in anguish, the bond still clinging to Ryker despite his rejection. The ache in her chest was unbearable, as if a piece of her soul had been ripped away, leaving behind a hollow void that nothing could fill. “Elena…” The sound of Ryker’s voice—her name on his lips—cut through her pain, but when she looked at him, the man she had always admired, the one who was supposed to be her fated mate, all she saw was the cold indifference in his eyes. He wasn’t hers. He had chosen Selene. The murmurs of the pack grew louder now, whispers spreading like wildfire through the gathered wolves. She could feel their eyes on her, pity and shock mingling in their gazes as they watched her fall apart. “Elena, I—” Ryker began, but she didn’t let him finish. “Don’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling as she fought to hold back the tears threatening to spill. “Don’t say anything else.” She didn’t want to hear his excuses. She didn’t want to hear why he had rejected her. It didn’t matter anymore. Nothing mattered anymore. Without another word, Elena turned and fled from the ceremony, from the pack, from Ryker. The whispers followed her, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. The tears blurred her vision as she ran, her heart pounding painfully in her chest with every step. She didn’t stop running until she was far away from the pack, deep into the woods where no one could find her. Only then did she collapse onto the forest floor, her chest heaving as the sobs she had been holding in finally broke free. The pain was unbearable. She clutched her chest, as if trying to hold the pieces of her shattered heart together, but it was no use. The mate bond was still there, pulsing weakly, a cruel reminder of what she had lost. What she had never really had. She had heard stories of mates being rejected, of the pain that followed, but nothing could have prepared her for this. She had always believed in the bond, in the power of the connection between mates. She had believed that when she found her mate, everything would fall into place. But Ryker had chosen Selene. The woman he had been with long before Elena had ever come into the picture. It was clear now, painfully clear, that she had never stood a chance. Selene was everything Elena wasn’t—beautiful, confident, strong. She was the perfect Luna, the perfect match for an Alpha like Ryker. And Elena? She was just an ordinary she-wolf. A woman who had dared to believe that the Moon Goddess had something special planned for her. Now, all that remained was the emptiness. Ryker’s Point of View Ryker watched Elena flee from the pack ceremony, her broken expression etched into his mind. His wolf Zeke snarled in protest, furious at the rejection, but Ryker forced himself to stay calm. He had made his choice. Selene stood beside him, her hand slipping into his, but the warmth he expected from her touch didn’t come. Instead, all he could think about was Elena—how her eyes had filled with hurt, how her voice had trembled when she told him not to speak. He hated himself for causing her that kind of pain. The mate bond had been a cruel twist of fate. He had spent years with Selene, building a life with her, and he couldn’t just throw it all away because of a bond, no matter how strong it was. But the guilt gnawed at him, a constant reminder that he had hurt the one person who was supposed to be his other half. His wolf growled again, urging him to go after her, to make things right. But Ryker knew there was no going back. He had made his decision. The pack needed stability, and Selene had been by his side for years. She was the logical choice for Luna. She knew the pack, she understood its politics, and she was already loved by the wolves. Elena, on the other hand, was… different. She had always been quieter, more reserved, and though Ryker had admired her strength and kindness, he had never imagined her as his mate. But the moment the bond had snapped into place during the ceremony, everything had changed. For a split second, he had considered it—choosing Elena, following the bond. But it wasn’t that simple. He had responsibilities, a duty to his pack, and the bond wasn’t enough to erase the life he had built with Selene. Selene shifted beside him, her grip tightening on his hand as she looked up at him with a small smile. “It was the right choice,” she whispered, her voice smooth and confident. “You know that, right?” Ryker nodded, though the guilt twisted deeper inside him. “Yeah. The right choice.” But as he looked out into the distance, where Elena had disappeared into the woods, a part of him wasn’t so sure. Elena’s Point of View Elena sat by the riverbank, the cool breeze doing little to ease the pain in her chest. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the water, but she barely noticed. All she could feel was the emptiness. She didn’t know how long she sat there, staring out at the river as the tears slowly dried on her cheeks. Hours, maybe. The pain didn’t ease, but the tears eventually stopped. She had to leave. The realization hit her like a punch to the gut, but it was the only way. She couldn’t stay here, in this pack, surrounded by reminders of Ryker’s rejection. Every corner of the territory would remind her of him—of the bond, of what they could have had. And worse, she would have to watch him with Selene, watch as they ruled the pack together, watch as he made Selene his Luna. Her heart couldn’t take it. With trembling hands, Elena pushed herself to her feet, her decision made. She had to leave. She had to get as far away from the Crescent Moon Pack as possible, away from Ryker and the bond that still tied her to him. She didn’t know where she would go or what she would do, but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that she couldn’t stay. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Elena turned her back on the pack that had been her home for as long as she could remember. And with a final glance at the place she had once called home, she walked away.
