"Daddy?" The word oozed from Elena's lips like honey, each syllable carefully sweetened to mimic the devoted daughter. She watched Dr. Caulfield's face crinkle up in a smile, his eyes going all dewy the way only a father gazing at his beloved child could manage. To him, the woman standing there in a nimbus of afternoon light was Emily, his cherished lost lamb miraculously returned to the fold. Elena drank in his affection, allowing her lips to curve in a radiant smile. She was a master at this game of masks, having spent hour upon hour hunched over home movies, obsessively studying every last tic and mannerism until Emily's face and voice had become hers. Until the line between acting and reality blurred into a fog so thick even Elena could no longer see through it. At first, it had been grueling work peeling off her own skin to slip into Emily's. Each gesture, each delicate lilt of the voice had to be painstakingly learned, molded, scrutinized under a microscope until flawless. Dr. Caulfield was a brutal taskmaster, insisting on absolute perfection with no margin for even the slightest slip that might betray the deception. From the delicate manner in which she cradled her teacup to the rhythmic sway of her hips as she glided across the room, Elena had painstakingly studied and assimilated Emily's essence, breathing life into a fabricated identity that gradually became her own. It was all EmilyEmilyEmily on an endless hellish loop until Elena's own thoughts started sounding like someone else's. As Dr. Caulfield set the invitation card on the table and pulled out a chair for her to join him on the balcony, Elena glided across the room with practiced grace, her movements a studied reflection of Emily's poise and refinement. "Daddy," she began. "Why have you asked to meet with me so suddenly?" Dr. Caulfield's expression brightened, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he regarded her with pride. "My dear, I'm organizing a gala for the opening of our new international hospital," he explained with barely contained excitement. "And we'll be hosting some very special guests." Elena c****d her head, her brow furrowing in a calculated display of curiosity. "Special guests?" she prompted, her tone a perfect blend of innocence and intrigue. "Indeed," Dr. Caulfield affirmed, "Miles Carson and his wife, Amber, will be in attendance." The names hung in the air like a sickly miasma - Miles Carson and his wife, Amber. Elena felt them ignite something deep in her gut, a ravenous fury burning through her like alcoholic fire. Miles, the man who had once looked into her eyes and vowed eternal devotion before discarding her like so much human refuse. All because of that black widow, Amber, and the venomous lies she injected into his rotting brain. Just the thought of them twisted Elena's belly into weights, her fingers clenching into fists so tightly curved her nails threatened to punch through the meat of her palms. She could feel the hate monsters writhing under her skin, battering to be let loose. But she kept the mask firmly in place, not a flicker to betray the hell tornado swirling behind her eyes. Poor oblivious Dr. Caulfield. Her dear old man had absolutely no idea of the elaborate death cult fiction he'd orchestrated to make Elena Brown vanish into smoke. The greased officials, the forged papers, even the anonymous corpse meticulously procured and burnt beyond recognition to sell the lie of her demise to the world. Elena had been left with nothing – no family, no future, and no one to turn to except for the man who'd given her a second chance at life, albeit through twisted means. Here's how I imagine Danielle Lori might write that continuation in her dark romance style: A saccharine smile curved Elena's lips as she lifted the delicate teacup. "Is that so? Well, I think you shouldn't invite them so soon, Daddy." Dr. Caulfield's brow furrowed, his eyes questioning her defiance of his wishes. "But why ever not? Miles Carson is a powerful man in the business world. Extending him an invitation would be wise." Elena tilted her head, allowing her chestnut curls to spill over one shoulder in a calculated show of innocence. "Precisely why we mustn't rush, Daddy. Let's whet their appetite first by inviting their rivals - those lesser men who covet what Miles has built." Understanding flickered in the depths of Dr. Caulfield's gaze as he processed her cunning suggestion. "Ah, I see now. By overlooking them initially, it will sting their massive egos. Then when we extend a personal invitation, it will soothe that arrogance and ensure they attend." "Exactly, Daddy." Elena's smile widened with faux delight at his praise. A little teasing provocation was the perfect lure to snare egomaniacs like Miles Carson. Dr. Caulfield chuckled, his eyes crinkling with paternal pride. "Brilliant strategy, my dear Emily. You never fail to impress me." Elena heard the whispers of vengeance tickling the back of her mind like skeletal fingers. Goosebumps rose on her arms as she fought to keep the mask in place. Her time had come, all right - a year spent burying the old her six feet down. Replacing the fragile girl with this new creature. She supposed the old her, the soft and foolish Elena, was as good as dead now. Strangled by her own goddam niceness as she'd welcomed that black widow Amber into her life. Well, this new thing wearing Emily's pretty skin wouldn't make that same mistake. She turned to Dr. Caulfield, "Might I host the gala myself, Daddy?" The good doctor beamed, his face crinkling up like a plump little raisin. He hadn't got a clue about the cesspool churning behind those grass-green eyes. Elena could have been a reanimated corpse in a party dress and he'd still only see his beloved Emily. With a practiced grace that would have made Lucifer himself envious, Elena rose from her seat, every synaptic spark in her brain already firing off visions of the impending gala. She would oversee each microscopic detail herself, burnishing it to a flawless sheen - the kind of perfection that could camouflage even the most wicked of schemes festering just beneath the surface. Gliding through the manor's hushed halls, Elena tracked down the unfortunate soul known as Jenkins, her aristocratic inflections dripping from her tongue. "You there. How proceed the preparations for this...grand event?" She pronounced the last two words with a decided curl of the lip. The bent and swayback butler responded with an obsequious bob of his toe-head. "Quite smoothly, miss. The caterers and orchestra have been duly employed. We merely await your...refined eye for the finer aesthetics." Elena's gaze drifted up to the ballroom's exquisite chandelier, a priceless antique gem that dominated the vaulted space. Her face arranged itself into an impeccable mask of distaste. "I must confess, that dreadful thing simply won't do. It's obnoxiously gauche - we will be needing something more grandeur." Jenkins' bushy brows peaked at her dismissiveness of the priceless piece. "V-very good, miss. I shall attend to it post-haste." "See that you do." Elena tossed off the command with a regal flick of her wrist before turning away, her grass-green eyes glittering with malicious intent.
