Chapter 10: New Traditions

676 Words
Three weeks later, Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, adjusting the red dress she'd bought specifically for the Iron Wolves' annual Halloween party. It was the first time in years she'd bought something just because it made her feel beautiful, and the confidence it gave her was intoxicating. "Mama, you look like a princess!" Emma declared from the doorway, dressed in her fairy costume complete with glittery wings. "Thank you, sweetheart. Are you ready for the party?" "Is it really okay that we're going?" Ethan asked, appearing beside his sister in his superhero costume. "Even though we're not really part of the club?" Maya knelt down to his level, smoothing his cape. "We're part of their family, and they're part of ours. That's what matters." The drive to the clubhouse was filled with the twins' excited chatter about the party. Maya felt a flutter of nerves as Cole's truck pulled into the parking lot, which was already full of motorcycles and decorated with orange and black streamers. "You sure about this?" Cole asked, seeming to sense her apprehension. "I'm sure," Maya said, and she meant it. These people had become her community, her chosen family. The clubhouse was transformed for the occasion, with carved pumpkins lining the windows and a buffet table groaning under the weight of homemade dishes. Children in costumes ran between the adults, their laughter filling the air. "Maya!" A woman with short blonde hair approached them, her smile warm and welcoming. "I'm Sarah, Jax's sister. I've heard so much about you." "All good things, I hope," Maya said, shaking her hand. "The best things," Sarah assured her. "And these must be the famous twins." She crouched down to the children's level. "I'm Sarah. Would you like to meet my kids? They're right over there by the apple bobbing station." Emma and Ethan looked to Maya for permission, then scampered off with Sarah, leaving Maya alone with Cole and Jax. "They're going to be fine," Jax said, reading the worry in her expression. "Sarah's great with kids." "I know. I'm just... this is all so new." "Hey," Cole said, taking her hand, "we're in this together, remember?" The evening flew by in a blur of introductions, conversations, and watching the twins have more fun than they'd had in months. Maya found herself relaxing, laughing at the club members' stories and feeling genuinely welcomed by their wives and girlfriends. "So," Sarah said, appearing at Maya's elbow as they watched the kids play games, "how are you handling having two of the most eligible bachelors in Cedar Ridge wrapped around your finger?" Maya nearly choked on her punch. "I'm sorry?" Sarah laughed. "Honey, those two have been inseparable since they were twelve years old. We all wondered what would happen when they finally fell for the same woman. Turns out, they just decided to share." "Is that... is that okay? With everyone, I mean?" "Are you kidding? We've been waiting for years for them to find someone who could handle them both. You're good for them, Maya. Anyone can see that." Later, as the party wound down and the twins fell asleep in Maya's lap, Cole and Jax flanked her on the couch, their presence warm and reassuring. "This was perfect," Maya said softly, stroking Emma's hair. "It was," Cole agreed. "You belong here, Maya. All of you do." "We want to make this official," Jax said suddenly, then seemed to catch himself. "I mean, not official official. But... we want people to know. We want the twins to know they have a real family now." Maya looked between them, her heart full. "What are you saying?" "We're saying we love you," Cole said simply. "All of us. And we want to build a life together, whatever that looks like." "I love you too," Maya whispered, the words feeling natural and right. "Both of you." As they loaded the sleeping twins into the truck, Maya felt a profound sense of belonging. She was home, really home, for the first time in her life.
