Chapter 13: New Beginnings

636 Words
Six months later, Maya stood in the backyard of their new house—a larger place on the outskirts of Cedar Ridge with enough room for their growing family. Cole and Jax had pooled their resources to buy it, and it finally felt like home. The twins were playing on the new swing set Cole had built, their laughter filling the air. Emma was teaching Ethan how to pump his legs to go higher, her protective instincts already strong at five years old. "Mama!" Emma called out. "Watch me go really high!" "I'm watching, sweetheart," Maya called back, one hand resting on her still-flat stomach. "Nervous?" Jax asked, appearing beside her with two glasses of lemonade. "About which part?" Maya asked, accepting the drink gratefully. "All of it. The baby, telling the twins, figuring out how to explain to people that you're not sure which one of us is the father." Maya laughed. "When you put it like that, it sounds pretty overwhelming." "Good thing we're in it together," Cole said, joining them on the porch. Maya looked between her two husbands—because that's what they were, even if only one marriage was legal. They'd figured out a way to make their unconventional family work, and they were happier than any of them had ever imagined possible. "Are you ready to tell them?" Cole asked, nodding toward the twins. "As ready as I'll ever be," Maya said. They called the twins over, and Emma and Ethan climbed onto the porch swing between Cole and Jax, their faces bright with curiosity. "We have some news," Maya said, sitting down across from them. "Are we getting a puppy?" Ethan asked hopefully. "Even better," Jax said with a grin. "You're going to be a big brother and sister." Emma's eyes went wide. "Really? There's a baby in your tummy, Mama?" "There is," Maya confirmed. "Will it be a boy or a girl?" Ethan asked. "We won't know for a while yet," Cole said. "But either way, it's going to be very lucky to have you two as big siblings." Emma looked thoughtful. "Will the baby call you both daddy?" Maya held her breath, wondering how to explain the complexities of their situation to a five-year-old. "The baby will call us whatever feels right," Jax said simply. "Just like you do." Both twins had started calling Cole and Jax "daddy" naturally, without any prompting. It had happened gradually over the months, and now it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. "I want to teach the baby how to ride a bike," Emma declared. "And how to play with trucks," Ethan added. "The baby will be very lucky to have you both," Maya said, pulling them close. As the sun set over Cedar Ridge, Maya looked around at her family—her chosen family, her real family—and felt a profound sense of contentment. The road had been long and difficult, but it had led her exactly where she needed to be. Cole reached over and took her hand, while Jax's arm came around her shoulders. The twins were already making plans for their new sibling, their voices full of excitement and love. "I love you," Maya said softly, her words encompassing all of them. "We love you too," Cole replied. "All of us," Jax added. "Always." As the stars came out overhead, Maya closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of her family—laughter, conversation, the gentle creaking of the swing, the distant hum of motorcycles on the highway. It was the sound of home, of belonging, of a love that defied convention but was no less real for being different. She had ridden into love on the back of a motorcycle, and found something more beautiful than she'd ever dared to dream.
