Nikolai I tossed the cigarette into the waste bin for the fifth time. London was supposed to meet for dinner. The paparazzi were already here, everyone was waiting and she was just taking my time like it’s worth nothing. “Where is Miss Pierce?” I settled in the back of the McLaren plucking my leather gloves one finger at a time. I got frustrated already so I’m going to search for her myself. “Sorry sir but Miss Pierce is at a birthday party in Chelsea.” Is she now? “Where?” “The Swan and Wine. She’s apparently having cocktails with colleagues judging by the posts on her i********: page. “Ah, Off we go then.” I made a mental note to get an i********: social page too. It’ll make things easier. The burgundy building stood beautifully under the sunset. Through the clear window I spot the celebrant wearing a pink birthday sash over her pale blue tweed dress. I scanned the room with my eye until it fell on a familiar blonde hair and jade green eyes holding a cocktail glass and talking to a man? I stared at her as she tipped her head back and laughed heartily at something the man said. She shook her head giving him a playful chest pat and sipping on her drink demurely. I felt hard stares on her and I turned to him. Molten lava eyes with flecks of green hidden behind thick rimmed glasses stared right at her then at me. He stood at the corner nursing a glass of whiskey while watching her. Sparks of jealousy rose up in me. Who the f**k was that and why was he staring at her like I do? I looked back at my woman. She was dressed so prim and proper. Her blonde style was styled to perfection. I have always loved her long hair but this new change brought out something I never thought would look so good on her. I didn’t wait to hear what my assistant had to say. I immediately stormed out, shutting the door behind me. The entire room fell in silence as I stepped in. And it was just her and that bastard beside her who hadn't noticed my presence. ‘Look at me’ I grunted internally. f*****g notice me, you always do. I glanced at the stranger who was once staring at her. The fucker had the guts to lift an eyebrow at me. Clearly he doesn’t know me. “Adeline.” She paused for a second before turning to me. Her eyebrow scrunched and her lips had a downward curl screaming disgust. She looked like she wanted to do ugly things to me. “Why are you here?” She said with a forced smile. Despite how light her tone is to others, it can’t hide the irritation in it. She was the only human alive who wasn’t scared of me. The man was scared obviously judging by how pale he became. Maybe it’s the eye and tattoos. “You’re not in any position to ask questions.” I smoothed a hand over my coat. “You should feel so lucky that the paparazzi had the patience of a dog. Let’s get going.” I hook my index finger in her direction and turn to leave. From my hind sight, she showed me the finger then turned to her new conquest, apologising much to my dismay. She then walked to the celebrant smiling and kissing her goodbye. But that didn’t fuel my anger as it did when she walked to the lava eyes and she shyly told him she was leaving. I could sense the tension between them. Anxiety clawed at my chest at the thought of her liking someone else and moving on without me. I can stand her hatred but never her nonchalance. She downed her entire cocktail in a go and followed behind. I scanned her face for emotions and as usual, I found none. “Manor.” I ordered the driver. “Sorry Miss Pierce.” My assistant, Jeffrey muttered, his face laced with pity. “I don’t want to hear any of that, Jeff. It’s not your fault.” “Stop talking to my wife, Mr. Anderson.” I emphasized his last name rather rough than normal. She nudges my side, flashing me a deadly glare. It speaks volumes but since the contract entails nobody but us and of course my beta knows about our agreement, she has decided to act tolerably towards me, for now. “So who’s the guy?” She turned to me, her face scrunched in confusion. “What guy? I talked to a lot of guys today.” She was baiting me. “The puny guy with the weird face bumps.” “You mean Mr. Edward? He’s just a colleague in the junior league. I’m his mentor in the field. And that’s acne, Nikolai. Humans have those.” Yeah, she’s pretty good at her job. I heard so much about it. “No, not him. I mean the guy that’s built like a wall at the corner over there with the glasses.” “You mean Calhoun then.” She smiles. Now that’s suspicious. “I guess because the name Edward can’t be given to a guy like that.” “Well he’s the boss and my mum’s boyfriend.” “I see.” I muttered. No mother’s boyfriend will be looking at their future step daughter the way he was looking at her. “He stares quite a lot at you.” “He was just being over protective, something you couldn’t do.” She sighs. “We are in a mutual agreement. Let’s not blow this up by you trying to fit into my life when I’ve already kicked you out. It’s my business not yours.” I didn’t respond to her. I fisted my palms to stop myself from grabbing her and kissing the sass out of her but knowing her she would bite my lips off, not that I would mind. I grabbed my phone and texted someone. I need to find out who the motherfucker truly is and why it doesn't have a scent. Surely if he’s human he’s supposed to have some kind of smell, a distinct scent and even if he’s not human maybe a witch or a vampire there’s also a distinct scent for those creatures but he has no scent. “Did glasses ever tell you if he’s human?” I pressed further. She looked at me, her green eyes shone with pure anger. “Or is it me prying into your business because he’s not your business.” “I’m his personal assistant but there are some questions some people would rather ask, like for example how far have you gone with my brother’s case?” Touché. Honestly I wasn’t able to find any leads yet considering how long the disappearance has been and there were no lead suspects. “I’m working on it.” I muttered. I felt her tense and I didn’t hesitate to put my hand over hers using my thumb to brush over her pixie finger. “We’ll find him.” For a moment she relaxed before flinching and pulling her hand away with such force that her hand banged against the window making her hiss. I furrowed my brows, my hand itching to check the broken acrylic nail. Her face morphed into a neutral expression. “Well that was what our agreement is all about.” Fuck, this woman.
