“Are these...men shoes? Did mom’s feet grow again?” I asked myself while I stared down at the black leather in front of me. I shrugged my shoulders then entered. Maybe it’s the gardener or the repair man. It’s been five years since I moved out, five years since Elliot’s disappearance. I heard water running in the kitchen and her voice chirper than usual. I chuckled lightly. She must be happy to see me here. Despite my plea, she refused to move even though the silence constantly reminded her of Elliot. Today was his birthday and I just wanted to sniff his hoodie again. I entered our room, his bed was neatly tucked and things arranged. We left his books dusty because that’s the way he likes it. He says whenever he dusted the covers, it made the book more important, interesting and expensive. I wish I was there with him. I was so blinded by Nikolai I didn’t even care to know what was going on in his life. I was so f*****g stupid back then. The humiliation didn’t just take its toll on Mom and me but on Elliot too and I was too selfish to know. Three days later, he was gone, vanished in thin air and no traces of him. It was like he never existed. I tried to pass the information around but people mocked, they f*****g laughed, nobody believed me and fuck...I think I’m going to cry now. “Am I interrupting something?” Was this real or am I just staring at the most beautiful eyes on a male I’ve ever seen aside Nikolai’s of course? The amber blended in so well with the green, it was almost magical. He was wearing tailored pants and a collared shirt and f*****g glasses. Glasses never looked so good on a man like this. I caught the glimpse of dark ink poking out of his collar and I internally purred but then...who was he? He dropped the box he was holding. “Abigail asked me to bring these to Elliot’s room.” Abigail? He calls my mother by her first name? I was about to speak when Abigail wrapped her arm around handsome’s waist. I darted my gaze between them then burst out laughing. A boy toy that looks at least two to five years older than me?Seriously? “Mom...can I speak to you for a sec?” I walked to the kitchen waiting for her to enter before shutting the door. I took deep breaths then turned to her, a forced smile on my face. “I see you’re having so much fun with the new guy...care to share what’s new?” “It’s not what you think.” She muttered, pouring herself whiskey. “He’s just here for a pastime.” “And soon I’ll be calling him daddy, right?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about but he looks like a great arm candy.” I gave her a glare. “What? I’m not getting any younger.” “You’re already old!” I sighed, shaking my head. I’m getting migraines from talking too much. “Just so you know, I won’t be calling him dad and I will not approve of having children either. I’m not changing diapers.” “You should get to know him. He’ll be around here often. He’s a great guy.” “I will not be doing that.” I was about to leave when I paused. “One more thing, you know I don’t approve of werewolves so I hope he’s not one...those eyes are suspicious.” “Calhoun is one hundred percent human. I can assure you that.” I blew out a breath I didn’t know I held. Why was I eager to know? Did I hope we...my mother and him were compatible? Yes. Was it wrong? Also yes but so what...one can admire creations, can’t we? “You should get along with him. You’ll be seeing him often.” Mother winked at me then resumed chopping her vegetables. I sighed. It wouldn’t hurt if I said hi. I walked back to the sitting room and he met my gaze almost immediately, then he pushed his glasses up the rim of his nose. He’s doing a pretty good job organising the place like he knew where to move the stuff. Looking at him up close he looks older for sure and pretty good looking too. “So what kind of things does Elliot like?” His deep voice cut through the air like a knife cutting through butter. I might get addicted to hearing him talk. I almost stuttered and I didn't stutter. “He likes to read classics. It’s the one thing that he does without getting tired so we keep it dusty the way he likes it.” “Seems like a smart kid.” He smirked, those amber eyes on me. He raked his eyes down my body then back to my eyes. “I see where he gets his genes from. I’m sorry for your loss.” “He is...not lost yet.” I was lost in thought for a second then pointed at his fit. He does look smart. “Yeah...the glasses speak a lot too. You don’t look bad yourself.” I don’t know whether he’s complimenting me or my mom but I indulge him nevertheless. The silence became awkward and he’s not letting his gaze off me. “I heard you don’t like werewolves. Any problem with them?” “Are you...one?” I asked, my eyes narrowing in suspicion. “Is there a problem with me hating them?” He shrugged. “I’m not a werewolf but I deal with them often.” “They are greedy, selfish beings. I had a bad experience with one of them. I don’t want another so I’m avoiding it.” “Noted.” He gave a nod as if getting what I said. “I’m Calhoun by the way. I heard you work at Shadow fall Pharmaceuticals.” “Yes, as a finance officer.” I was about to say something when he cut in. “How’s work there? Are you enjoying it?” Considering it took me three and a half years to be promoted to being the finance officer, I could fairly say that favour has been on my side. But the truth is I handle most affairs of the company without even seeing who my boss is. “Look Calhoun, I’m not calling you daddy or anything. Let’s keep things formal and out of each other’s business. Don’t waltz in here playing the‘I want to know all about you’ dad like you’ve been here the whole time. Stay out my way and don’t you f*****g cheat on my mom with a cheap bimbo.” His brows furrowed for a moment but that was the only emotion giving him away but he masked it up immediately. “That’s disappointing. I was hoping you’ll call me daddy though.” He paused for a second, the smirk fading before he finally spoke. “And lock your door before you sleep tonight.” Lock my door? Why would I lock my door in my own house?
