Interview

As Kaitlyn returned to her cozy nest, the tension that had built up throughout the day finally dissipated. She shed her long dress, stepping barefoot on the soft carpet as she headed straight for the bathroom. Soon, the frosted glass of the shower enclosure was covered with steaming mist. Barely finished with her shower, the ringtone of her phone echoed from the other room, one ring after another. Kaitlyn hurriedly wrapped herself in a towel and exited to answer the call. Glancing at the caller ID, Kaitlyn's face fell. She extended her slender arm from the towel and tapped to accept the call. "Mom," she said. Alice's stern voice immediately filled the air. "Kaitlyn, I heard from your aunt that you splashed milk all over a man during a blind date?" Alice, a university professor, had lost all face due to her daughter's pregnancy out of wedlock and the unknown father. There was no chance of a pleasant tone. Kaitlyn put the phone on speaker and replied while applying body lotion, "Mom, you don't know how obnoxious that man was! He..." Before Kaitlyn could vent about Alexander, Alice interrupted her. "No matter how bad he was, is it better than being pregnant out of wedlock?" "Kaitlyn, the current situation is that you have no qualifications to pick a man. It's the men who are picking you." "After work tomorrow, go to the Feast West Restaurant. I've arranged a new blind date for you. That's it." Alice spoke decisively and prepared to hang up. Kaitlyn tightened her grip on the body lotion bottle, her white teeth biting into her red lips. Her voice carried a stubborn resolve. "Who says I have no qualifications to pick? I'll find an excellent man and show you." Alice sneered, not believing her at all. "Don't be late tomorrow." Click. Hearing the hang-up sound on the other end, Kaitlyn rested her chin on her palm. Her long, damp hair fell across her cheek, framing her soft lips as she looked at the pretty woman in the mirror. Her slender fingers traced her eyebrow. She was so beautiful. There were plenty of men. At worst, she could raise the child herself. The summer evening breeze blew in through the half-open window, causing the curtains to flutter and bringing a coolness to the room. The next morning, Kaitlyn woke up, ate breakfast, and was about to change her shoes at the entrance. Her fingers paused over the high heels, and thinking of the danger of twisting her ankle yesterday, she obediently picked up a pair of white sneakers to put on. With a beige bowknot chiffon shirt, a twill skirt, and her white sneakers, she looked lively and charming. As she arrived at the office, a colleague from the same department came over and handed her the folder of interview materials for today. "Kaitlyn, you look very pretty today. Are you aware that you're going to interview Lucas?" "Interview Lucas? Which Lucas?" Kaitlyn asked as she flipped through the materials. Elizabeth Johnson, seeing her confusion, sat down beside her and said, "It's Lucas, the president of the Watson family, whom we discussed yesterday. He has accepted an interview with our newspaper." At this moment, Kaitlyn also saw the interview assignment in the materials. It was indeed Lucas. She rotated the neutral pen in her hand, suppressing the odd feeling in her heart and asking, "I'm from the social news department. Why am I doing a financial figure interview?" Elizabeth shrugged, "I don't know about that. Wait, the editor-in-chief is coming..." The sound of the editor-in-chief's leather shoes followed, carrying a briefcase. Passing by Kaitlyn, he tapped her desk twice with his finger. "Kaitlyn, come with me." Their newspaper's editor-in-chief, Mark, was forty years old this year. With his neatly trimmed short hair, he was a refined older man who hated it when people said, 'I can't do it.' As Kaitlyn watched him tap her desk, revealing the shiny Rolex on his wrist, she smoothly took the folder that Elizabeth had given her and followed him to his office. After Mark turned on the air conditioning and slowly poured himself a cup of Earl Grey tea, he indicated to her, "Kaitlyn, take a seat." Kaitlyn calmly placed the materials on the table and inquired, "Editor-in-Chief, could you please explain what's going on? If I remember correctly, I belong to the Social News Department, don't I?" "Social and financial news are closely intertwined," Mark replied, holding his mug with both hands. "Kaitlyn, everyone in the news department wanted this interview with Lucas, and it fell on your lap. Do you know what that means?" Noticing her perplexed expression, Mark patted her shoulder and added, "Don't overthink it, young one. This is a golden opportunity. Just seize it." "Alright, you can go and prepare now. I have work to do." After Kaitlyn left with her folder, Mark dialed a phone number. "Hey, Ethan? I've made the arrangements. Kaitlyn will be there this afternoon." "Great, great! Remember to send my regards to Lucas for me." ... Back at her desk, Kaitlyn looked at the materials. She aspired to be an outstanding social news reporter, not a financial one. Moreover, she had scratched Lucas' car before. Thinking that such a coveted opportunity had unexpectedly fallen on her, her first thought was that Lucas might be holding a grudge and wanted to make things difficult for her. Then she realized that as a prominent figure, he probably forgot about her already and wouldn't go out of his way to investigate and trouble her. Well, she decided not to dwell on it. After all, she had already accepted the task and needed to complete it flawlessly. When she and the cameraman arrived at the Watson family's headquarters building at 2:30 pm, the male cameraman looked up at the towering commercial building and exclaimed, "Truly, the wealthiest family in Nova Haven! I heard this entire building is Watson's office complex." Kaitlyn nodded, feeling the intense heat of the midday sun on her face. She tried to keep her spirits up. "Let's go in and make this quick." "Are you okay?" The cameraman noticed her looking like she might faint from heatstroke and reached out to steady her. Just then, a man in a suit emerged from the building, holding a parasol. He walked quickly towards them and said, "Ms. Sheng and Mr. Pang, I'm Ethan, Lucas' assistant. I'm here to welcome you." Kaitlyn and the cameraman exchanged glances. They were surprised that the Watson family was so approachable, with the president's assistant personally greeting them. It was no wonder they were the wealthiest family.
