It was raining cats and dogs. I was running home from choir practice, exhausted, cold, and scared. It was almost dark, and I was nowhere near home.
I stopped by a toy shop to catch my breath, and that’s when I saw him. A slender, red-haired boy—he looked around my age, and he was also soaking wet and shivering.
"Stupid rain," he coughed.
"If I had known, I would have taken an umbrella with me," I said, rubbing my eyes.
"Me too," he sighed.
"I think I'll wait till it stops," I told him.
"Do you live around here?" he asked.
"No," I replied.
"Me neither," he said. He came closer and asked my name.
"Ivy," I said.
"I'm Jasper."
"Nice to meet you, Jasper."
"Bad timing, but I think you're really pretty."
"Thanks. No one ever calls me pretty," I blushed a little.
"Can I see you again?"
"Sure. I live across from the city mall—the blue duplex is my house." I had no idea why I gave a stranger my home address, but I felt the need to.
There was something about him I liked, though I couldn’t quite figure out what it was.
He was tall, with blonde hair, green eyes, and fair skin. He wore a black hoodie and jeans. He seemed harmless, but was he?
Jasper—that was what he said his name was. We talked until the rain stopped and then went our separate ways, but we promised to see each other again.
I had already fallen for him—his warm smile and handsome face. No guy that good-looking would ever want to talk to a freak like me.
I had braces and weird geeky glasses. My hair was bark brown, and I was very skinny and short. No guy would ever like me, but I had my hopes high for Jasper.
He was different. Somehow, I felt he might actually like me. I already liked him.
When I came home, Mom and Dad were worried sick and had already called the police.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. All I could think about was Jasper—the only guy who saw through my glasses and braces. He looked at me like I was a work of art, and even though he was cold, he offered me his jacket to keep me warm.
He was definitely the kind of guy I needed. He was a dream come true.
