Chapter 11: Inside
Barrett was sullen the next morning. I could tell he was confused. When I asked what he remembered from the day before it was as if I were asked him to recall a dream.
“I’m going to see the tree,” he said when I came out of the bathroom and saw him putting on his sneakers.
“What?” I hurriedly found my clothes and just barely got my shoes on by the time he was headed to the door.
“Barrett, what are you talking about? There’s nothing there?”
“You know she’s there, you know it!” His voice was getting a crazed edge to it. I had to keep him calm until I figured out my next move.
“Let me drive,” I offered and yanked the keys from his hand. “We’ll go to the tree, and you’re going to see for yourself.”
“Maybe,” I heard him say as I maneuvered past him and down the stairs.
