Chapter 6: The contract

1608 Words
Ella's POV "I don’t do werewolf things. Absolutely not." My voice was firm, unwavering. Dominic leaned back in his chair, completely unfazed. "Well, I think it’s a little late for that," he said smoothly. His eyes flickered to my stomach. "Because you already have one growing inside you as we speak." I swallowed, my grip tightening around the contract in my hands. My eyes scanned the words again, my stomach twisting as I read: After the birth of the heir, Mrs. Barton shall be paid $1,000,000 for her services. My blood boiled. I threw the papers onto the table. "So I’m just some prize sow to birth your offspring?" Dominic’s smirk faded, and his voice lowered. "No. Technically, you’d be my first lady, which you might actually enjoy. I’m running for what’s known in our world as the Alpha King." I let out a dry laugh. "I’m not having my child raised by werewolves." I turned on my heel, determined to leave, but before I could take a step, Dominic’s hand closed around my wrist. "Ella, listen to me." His voice was gentle but firm. "If they find out you’re human, both you and the child will be dead. The only way to keep you safe is for you to stay with me." My breath hitched. I didn’t want to believe him, but deep down, I knew he was right. "Do this for our child. Please." His tone softened, and for the first time, I saw something raw in his expression. I clenched my jaw. "I’m not afraid of you." Dominic chuckled, his grip loosening. "Really? I was actually enjoying that." Before I could snap at him, he pulled a small box from his pocket and handed it to me. "Oh, before I forget—this is for you." I hesitated before opening it, revealing a tiny silver bell inside. Confused, I rang it lightly. Dominic instantly stilled, his hand darting out to stop the sound. His expression turned serious. "That’s something only I and the pup can hear. It’s for emergencies. If you ring it, I’ll be there. I told you I’d protect you, and I meant it." I swallowed hard and whispered, "Thank you." Dominic nodded. "Good. Now, why don’t you take a look at that contract? In the meantime, Janis will help you settle in. And if you need anything, ask Hugo's he’ll take care of you." With that, he turned and left, heading to his office. I sat on the edge of the bed, my fingers tracing the small silver bell in my palm. My other hand rested on my stomach, where a life I never expected to have was growing inside me. The room was silent, but my mind was anything but. Their voices echoed in my head, sharp and cruel as if they had been spoken just yesterday. "You're just a broke-ass babysitter. You can't even afford to have a child." I clenched my jaw, my grip tightening around the bell. I could still see the way they had looked at me, my ex-boyfriend and my so-called best friend, standing side by side, smirking as they ripped me apart with their words. The betrayal had cut so deep, but here I was, still standing. I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked down at my stomach. "Whether or not I like it, he's your father," I whispered. "It doesn’t matter what I want. I have to hide my identity and do what’s best for you." I stared down at the papers for a long moment. Then, with a deep breath. Dominic was already halfway to his car, his phone in one hand, his expression sharp with focus. He looked like a man who always had control, always had a plan. But not this time. “Dom, wait!” I called, hurrying after him, my fingers gripping the contract tightly. He stopped just as he reached for the car door and turned toward me, his brow arching. “You’ve made a decision?” I took a steadying breath. “I’ll sign your contract.” A slow smirk spread across his face. “I knew you’d come around.” I narrowed my eyes. “Yeah? And how exactly did you know?” Dominic stepped closer, his towering presence making my heart pound. He tilted his head slightly, his voice dropping to that smug, knowing tone. “Because I always get what I want.” I scoffed, shoving the contract against his chest. “Not everything. I’ve made some changes.” He glanced down at the papers, flipping through them lazily. “Oh?” “You cover my medical bills, but I don’t want your money,” I stated firmly. “And I’m not a prisoner in your home. I’ll be allowed to leave.” Dominic looked up, his gaze darkening. “With security.” I clenched my jaw but nodded. “Fine.” His lips twitched like he was holding back a smile. “Anything else?” “After the election is over, we get divorced. And we split custody,” I said, watching him closely for a reaction. He stilled, his playful expression fading. His grip on the contract tightened just slightly before he let out a low hum. “And what happens if you want to stay as my Luna?” I blinked, my throat suddenly dry. Ella’s POV I folded my arms, keeping my voice steady. “This is a pretend marriage. In public, I’ll be your Luna and a wolf. But in private—” Dominic cut me off, his voice firm. “No. The first rule of being a wolf is that the Alpha makes the rules.” His gaze was intense, challenging, waiting for my reaction. I could feel the heat of it pressing against me like a demand. I wasn’t one to submit easily, but if I was going to do this, I needed to play the part. I stepped closer, just enough to invade his space, tilting my head up to meet his eyes. “Yes, my Alpha,” I said, my voice smooth and sweet, laced with just enough defiance to see how far I could push him. Dominic’s eyes darkened, and for a split second, something unreadable flashed across his face—something dangerous, something possessive. Then, just as quickly, it was gone. His lips curved into a slow, satisfied smirk. “Perfect. You got a deal.” Ella’s POV Dominic extended his hand toward me, a knowing smirk tugging at his lips. “Pleasure doing business with you.” I stared at his hand for a moment before shaking it, feeling the warmth of his palm against mine. There was something unsettlingly final about this moment. With a steady breath, I signed the papers, my name now bound to a contract that would change everything. Dominic took the documents and tucked them away. “I’ve already sent for your things. They should be here shortly.” His expression grew more serious as he added, “But Ella, it’s very important that the staff believe that you and I are together—that you’re my true Luna. Especially Janis.” I arched my brow. “Who’s Janis?” “My housekeeper,” he replied. “And she’s particularly fond of my ex-wife.” I blinked. “You have an ex-wife?” Before he could answer, Dominic turned and called out, “Janis!” I barely had time to process what he’d just revealed before footsteps echoed down the hallway. My mind raced with questions. If his housekeeper was still loyal to his ex-wife, that meant she wouldn’t be too happy about me stepping in as the new Luna—even if it was all for show. I exhaled sharply. “You’re going to need to give me a werewolf 101 crash course.” Dominic chuckled, a low and amused sound. “I can do that.” Janis arrived swiftly, her posture rigid, eyes sharp as they flickered between Dominic and me. “Alpha,” she greeted him with a respectful nod. Dominic didn’t waste any time. “This is my Luna,” he stated firmly, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Please see to it that she gets settled.” Janis didn’t even glance at me. “Of course, Alpha.” Before I could process what was happening, Dominic turned to me and leaned in, pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead. His touch was warm, steady—almost convincing. My breath caught, but before I could say anything, he stepped back and walked away without another word. The second he was gone, Janis finally turned her attention to me, her eyes sweeping over me like I was something she needed to inspect. She circled me slowly, her lips pursed in disapproval. “You’re not very well-polished,” she muttered, more to herself than to me. Then, with a pointed look, she added, “But what should I expect from a rebound?” My hands clenched at my sides. I wasn’t expecting a warm welcome, but the venom in her tone made it clear—she didn’t see me as Dominic’s Luna. She saw me as a placeholder. I lifted my chin, meeting her stare head-on. “Lucky for you, I’m a quick learner.” Her eyes narrowed slightly, as if she was sizing me up, waiting for me to falter. But I refused to let her see even a flicker of doubt. Because if I was going to survive this arrangement, I needed to start playing the role of Luna, even if I had no idea what that truly meant.
