Ella's POV
I walked into the living room, I overheard Janis and another housekeeper arranging the couch, their discussion being about me.
"That Ella is nice," said the other housekeeper.
Janis snorted. "No, she acts like she owns the place. I don't trust her."
"Technically, she does," said the other.
"She's just a rebound," Janis retorted. "Whatever she wants, don't give it to her."
I fumed and walked into the room. "Cut the crap, Janis.".
Faking shock, she whirled. "Oh, my Luna, I didn't see you standing there."
"I'm not a rebound. I'm the woman of this house. Do you understand?"
Her eyes narrowed. "You're not a woman; you're nothing but a pregnant w***e!"
Reacting on impulse, I hit her.
The room was silent. Janis's cheek reddened, and she glared at me with unadulterated fury.
Before she could speak, Dominic entered, his presence commanding attention. "What's going on here?
Janis gestured toward me. "She hit me, Alpha!"
I turned to Dominic, my heart pounding. "She insulted me, called me. names."
Dominic's expression darkened. "Janis, you're relieved of duty. Pack your things and go."
Janis's eyes widened. "But Alpha—"
"Now," he commanded.
She stormed out, leaving an awkward silence in her wake.
Dominic glanced at me, his eyes relaxing. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, though my hands trembled. "I didn't mean to cause trouble.".
He sighed. "You're right to stand up for yourself. But be careful; not everyone will tolerate change."
I gulped hard, anticipating what was to come. "I'll take care."
As the days passed by, I observed small shifts in the mood of the household. Some of the staff were courteous, but some gave me cold, disapproving stares.
One evening, while I was walking the corridors, I overheard fragments of whispering voices emanating from the kitchen.
"Did you hear? Janis is spreading rumors about the Luna," one of them murmured.
My blood ran cold. If these rumors became public, my position—and security—could be jeopardized.
Determined to address the issue, I sought out Dominic.
"We need to talk," I said, finding him in his study.
He arched an eyebrow, looking concerned. "What's wrong?
"Janis is lying about me, about my heritage," I clarified.
Dominic's jaw tightened. "I'll deal with it."
"No," I cut in. "I have to do this myself. Show them I'm not afraid."
He looked at me for a moment before he nodded. "Very well. But you know I'm with you."
The next morning, I gathered the household staff in the main hall.
"I've heard the rumors," I began, my voice stern. "Let me say this one thing: I am your Luna, chosen by the Alpha. My past does not alter that."
Whispers ran through the crowd, but no one spoke out.
"If there is someone who has a problem, say something now," I encouraged.
There was silence.
"Good. Let us proceed as one," I concluded, sending them off.
As the staff dispersed, a young maid came to me.
"Luna," she whispered, "not all of them will be easy on you. But some of us are glad you're here."
I smiled my thanks. "Thank you."
Later in the evening, as I was preparing for bed, I heard a knock on my door.
"Come in," I said.
Dominic stood in my doorway, his face impassive. "I heard what you said today."
I nodded. "I had to say it."
He stepped closer, his eyes blazing. "You're braver than I knew.".
"I have to be," I whispered.
He reached out and cupped my face, his thumb stroking my cheek. "I'm proud to have you by my side."
My breath hitched as he leaned in, his lips claiming mine in a blinding kiss.
When we finally broke apart, I gasped, "Together."
"Always," he whispered, pulling me into his arms.
Dominic's eyes blazed with anger as he faced Janis in the main hall. "You will give respect to Ella as your Luna, or you will be released from this household." His voice echoed around the room, and there was no time for argument. "And you are never to enter our quarters again."
Janis's face blanched, and she stiffly nodded before she scurried away.
I sat on Dominic's office couch, watching him sort out some papers. His brows were furrowed, and a deep crease had appeared between them. He looked tired, yet his aura was still authoritative. Nobody would ever question his rule, not even I….his Luna. Or so everyone thought.
Only Dominic and I knew the reality.
I was human, pretending to be something I wasn't. And if anyone ever found out the truth, it would be my death.
Dominic let out a sigh and leaned back in his chair, tracing his fingers over his temples. "You're too quiet," he said, his deep, smooth voice laced with irritation. "What's on your mind?"
I smiled up at him. "Just thinking. You look tense."
He smirked, shaking his head. "You have no idea."
I could not respond before the door opened. Dominic's Beta, Caleb, entered, his face tense.
"Alpha, there is a problem."
Dominic's whole body stiffened. His hands gripped the arms of his chair harder as he looked at his Beta. "What is it?"
Caleb swallowed hard. "Alpha Marcus is at the gate. He is here to bring your Luna."
The room turned ice cold. My heart pounded as I looked at Dominic. His jaw set and his fists clenched. His usually serene face darkened in a way that made my flesh crawl.
"Oh, s**t," Dominic muttered under his breath.
His response put me into hyperdrive. Why was Alpha Marcus here? And why did I care so much?
"Something's wrong," I whispered.
Dominic looked at me, his golden eyes filled with something that I couldn't quite place—fear? Anger? Concern?
And then he said the thing that sent shivers down my spine.
"Alpha Marcus is here to meet you, he's an alpha like me, he'll smell you, to know if you're a werewolf or human.”
Dominic took a deep breath, his hold on my wrist growing tighter. "I need to do something to you, at least get you to smell like me."
Before I could react, Dominic wrapped his hands around my face and kissed me firmly. My eyes widened in shock, my heart pounding in my chest.
"What are you doing?" I panted, as he pulled back slightly.
"I need to kiss you so that you will smell like me when Alpha Marcus arrives," Dominic growled, his voice low and demanding.
He wouldn't stop. He kissed my hands, my hair, even pressed his lips lightly against the bottom of my collarbone. Just as he was about to move back, the office doors swung open, and Alpha Marcus walked in.
Dominic's arm curved around my waist, pulling me to his side as he stood watch over me.
