New York
Stepping into JFK Airport, a wave of sadness hit me, my family will not be here and at the same time I was happy to finally experience a fresh start
I struggled to roll my box across the crowded terminal to the checkpoint
When someone bumped into me, hitting my box away
“Sorry,” he said, glancing up with a polite smile before moving on.
Are people so rude?, he couldn't even help , I let out a frustrated sigh struggling to pick it up
I brought out my phone texting Stacy that I had arrived , she was so excited
A deep sigh escaped me when I saw a chair, and I sank onto a nearby seat, my legs aching from dragging my luggage and drinking water
Next to me, a man had dropped a rumpled paper that read “Job Vacancy.” Before standing up I picked it up and scanned the details. This could help, I muttered, stuffing it into my bag just as my phone buzzed
The Uber driver had arrived.
I grabbed my belongings and walked through quickly parking lot, scanning the license plates with squinted eyes
There finally his car, I let out a deep relief
“Welcome, ma’am,” the driver greeted, his smile warm as he helped load my luggage in the back of the car. I offered a return smile as I opened the door to seat
Skyscrapers every single corner , and quite a number of people flowed past quickly. I exhaled slowly as we got stuck in traffic,New York is beautiful I must say.
Brooklyn hit differently. The buildings were older, and the air smelled faintly of garbage and exhaust. This wasn’t the fancy NYC I’d seen in movies. I swallowed hard, dragging my box up the narrow steps to my second floor apartment. Each step made my arms burn, my moans echoing in the hall way.
The landlord handed me the keys and led me through the small space. The walls were bare, paint chipped in corners , and a rat scuttled past my foot. I yelped, running behind the landlord
You’d have to get used to this Tamara ,this place isn’t fancy at all,he whole his head tapping my shoulders.
This is it? I muttered under my breath, looking down at the floor. My dream of a new life suddenly felt heavy and unrealistic .I left my parents house for this??When does it all get better?
My phone rang.It was Stacy,I smirked
Hi Sisssy ,miss me much?
For the first time she confessed she did,Can I see around pleaseeee, she squinted her eyes pitifully,I turned the camera around showing her the entire space, her face seemed to change and though she didn’t say anything,I guess it wasn’t what she expected,it’s Brooklyn after all,not Central London,I’m here to get a better life.
My mind went aback to the paper from the airport
I quickly took the tote bag emptying the contents. Found it,I exclaimed!
It read Job vacancy at Lockwood Enterprises, they needed a Personal
Assistant ,between the ages of 22 to 25 years and I guess I fitted into the criteria, the salary also wasn’t bad for the position they offered
Without giving a second thought, I quickly
This could just be it ,she exhaled a deep breath
She spent the rest of the day cleaning up and organizing her belongings
Adrian
Mrs. Lockwood knocked lightly on my office door.
“Come in,” I said raising my head from my table in anticipation
“Good morning,” she greeted, her eyes twinkling as she took the seat opposite me.
I stood and wrapped my arms around her. “I’m fine, Ma.”
“Well, I am not,” she snorted, pulling back with a mock frown.
“What’s bothering my beautiful grandma?” I asked, moving papers aside on my desk.
“I woke up craving children around me,” she said, sighing.
“Not again, Ma,” I groaned, rubbing my face. “You always bring this up.”
“Well, why wouldn’t I?” she huffed. “I’m not getting any younger, you know. I want to see my grandchildren… and your wife.”
“It’ll happen in God’s time, Ma. Don’t worry.”
She leaned back, giving me a stern look. “You’ve been saying that forever! I want it now!” A fake tear slid down her cheek as she reached for my hand.
“Fine, fine,” I sighed, giving in. “I’ll bring you a wife.”
Her face lit up instantly. “Also… I’m old enough to retire now. But since you’re bringing a wife, I want to make sure the company’s ownership transfer is handled too.”
“Okay, Ma.”
“I’ll miss barging into your office like this when you retire,” she said with a wink, standing up and dragging her chair back. “Well, at least I’m still around I’ll come often.”she faked a laugh
I didn’t want to disappoint her this time. Picking up the phone, I called Sandra, my secretary. “Organize come to my office “ I instructed
My office door opened, preceded by a soft knock.
“You wanted me here, sir?” she asked, stepping in.
“Yes, have a seat,” I gestured. She settled in, eyes wide with anticipation.
“So… Does my grandmother wants a wife?” I said, leaning back in my chair. “I’m not ready.”
I laughed faintly. “I don’t even have a girlfriend, yet here I am, asking you to organize a wife for me.”
She blinked, clearly shocked. “Organize… you mean, find you a wife?”
“Yes,” I said, cutting in. “What do you know about a wife? You’re a woman you’d know a good woman when you see one.”
She hesitated, unsure.
“I’ll give you my requirements,” I continued. “We’ll put out a ‘job notification’ for women aged 22 to 25. We’ll interview them. That’s it. You’re in charge of organizing.
Alright sir , I’d arrange everything
The days passed. Candidates came and went. I was growing bored most were basic, nothing special.
And then she walked in.
A beautiful brown-skinned woman, tall, in a crisp skirt and heels. She carried herself with confidence. Somehow, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Everything about her screamed my type: beauty, intelligence, poise. Sandra seemed to notice it too she nodded subtly in agreement.
I studied her closely. My gaze, intense and piercing, seemed to make her uncomfortable but I couldn’t stop, there was something about her I just liked
“Miss,” Sandra finally said ,her tone even“you’ve passed the job qualifications. But I hope you understand the proper job description?”
Her eyes widened. “Job… description?”
“Yes,” Sandra replied, folding my arms. “You’re going to be Mr. Adrian’s assistant… at home.”
“At home?” Her voice trembled slightly.
I nodded. “A two-year contract marriage.”
Her face immediately showed disagreement. She hesitated. Unlike the other candidates, she was thinking twice.Struck between accepting and declining
This was the challenge I wanted. Why will she even think about it ?
I leaned forward slightly, interrupting her thoughts. “Are you ready to sign the contract, Miss?”
